Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.

Ben understands off topic stuff. He made it so difficult to carry on any kind of discussion in the Depression thread I've given up adding to it.
Aren't you they guy who told me there wouldn't be so much as a recession in Canada? Even PM Harper has seen the light. He formed a coalition with the Liberals. Harper supplies the support for the unemployed workers and the Liberals support him. More to the point, Harper shovels it and Iggy eats it.
Unfortunately, the leader I like the best, Gilles Duceppe, doesn't have a candidate in my riding.
I haven't seen the depression deeper much in Canda, we seem to have avoided most of it so far.
I suppose the effects of the current situation depends if a person works for the government or in private enterprise or has lost his/her job to the financial crisis.
In a way, I share your outlook. I almost always had Super Seniority, like I suspect you do. Do they still call it that? The bad times always effected the other guy.
Do you know the difference between an investment banker and a pizza? A pizza can feed a family of 4.
On a less serious note, have you heard the Sparklehorse album, It's A Wonderful Life? Sometimes, I like to listen to this album in dark solitude, consumed by a look of acquiescence, totally unmoving other than the occasionally flip of a bang away from my eyes. The ability to do this is the primary reason I stopped shaving my head.

Dixon, on July 30, 2007, you posted a chess trivia contest on ChessTalk. The questions were as follows:
1) Who is the highest-rated player to be paired UP in the first round of any Canadian Open during the past 12 years (including 1996-2007)?
2) What was that player's rating at that time?
3) Who did that paired-up player face?
4) Which Canadian Open did this occur at?
5) How did the paired-up player do in the game?
You stated that the first person to send you the correct answers by email would receive a prize: a book of his choice from the CFC store.
I sent you the correct answers. You informed me of this, and asked me what book I would like. You said that another person had sent in his solution just after me, and you would award him a prize as well, but would wait to post it until after we both told you what books we selected. I selected Chess Bitch by Jennifer Shahade. It had a nice pink cover.
A week went by and you did not make another post about the matter on ChessTalk. I posted an inquiry in response to your initial post. Other people queried, as well, as they evidently were curious about the results, but you responded to no one. I sent you an email; you did not respond.
Several months ago, I posted in one of your threads on ChessTalk, asking you why you had never sent me the book. Other posters stated that it was irresonspible and dishonest on your part to not send me the book after having said that you would. You then responded saying that you had merely forgot, and that you would send me the book right away. I thanked you and assumed you would.
I did not receive the book. A few months later, on the OCC website, I asked you about the book again. You did not respond to my post.
So, Dixon, did you ever intend on sending me the book, or did you simply wish to give the illusion that you were running and offering a prize for a contest? Was your attempt to trick the public into thinking that you were contributing more to the Canadian chess scene than you actually were?
Certainly, you have an obligation to send me my God damn book.

I'm actually hoping to leave my employer within a year to a year and a half to start as an articling student at a CA firm. I am finishing my 4th year courses at Ryerson in order to do so. That's how concerned I am with super seniority, which yes I do have after 18 years of service and by virtue of being a union steward. I plan to withdraw my OMERS pension fund and then manage this investment myself.
I am confident that the economy will hold up & that I will be able to pass the UFE final 3 day exam to earn my qualifications.
Currently CA firms are quite busy and there is a shortage of good CA students. As one CA told me accountants track both earnings and losses, good times and bad times. Accounting is one of the professions listed as being in demand along with IT and engineering.
It's about time I stop being paid from the taxpayer and start contributing to the private sector.

While contributing to the private sector is commendable, the government has to pay people to do the public sector work. Why shouldn't it be you? Doesn't your employer use the services of CA's?
I might kid about super seniority but there isn't anything wrong with it. I had it when I was an elected official many years ago. Also when I was a union steward for decades. I had the most department seniority and think they wanted me to be the steward so it wouldn't upset the order of the seniority of the other guys in the department. Not that anyone got laid off or fired. Not once in all the decades.
Good luck with the CA thing. I hope you have a better handle on the economy than I do. Really, I do hope that. You have some catching up to do. :)
My employer may use outside auditors that are CAs but they don't employ any CAs directly, only CGAs & CMAs, our internal auditor is a CGA or CMA and a certified internal auditor CIA I also would not be able to get an accouting designation while employed for city for a very long time as it would take that amount of time to get senior enough experience through our job posting system. I much prefer to work in a public accounting function, providing services to clients than doing accounting for the city. You get to see much more, many more businesses and clients. Initially I'm going to be taking a pay cut until I pass my professional exams. I'm sticking around to see what happens in a year and to pay all of my bills off & square away with everyone before the pay drop.
Here is one economic downturn sign for you, apparently Tim Hortons is not desperate to hire people anymore & those that work there are not getting full hours in some cases. Also Starbucks is laying off, although I haven't got confirmation of either thing. Not a sign of the end times maybe but a sign of the downturn.
