I assume this is White to play and draw (since there is no win - verified by using tablebases).

In studies, it is always White To Play. Same for Problems. There are some type of problems where Black plays first, but these are specialized types of problems.

The = sign at the bottom of a study indicates a draw is the goal. A win would have a + sign there.

Sorry - I missed the tiny "=" sign at the bottom. :-)

The b-pawn always seems to outrun the white king

          1. c8=Q? Bf5+
          2. Kc7 Bxc8
          3. Kxc8 b5 and black wins

          however, White can draw with

          1. Kc8 b5
          2. Kd7 b4
          3. Kd6 Bf5
          4. Ke5 Bc8
          5. Kd4 b3
          6. Kc3 Be6
          7. c8=Q Bxc8
          8. Kxb3 draw

The study is by A. Sarychev and K. Sarychev and appeared in Shakhmatny Listok 1928.12.25. Nice Christmas present!

When I see this I always remember a R.Reti problem. Both have nice non-trivial ideas.

                White to move and draw

(corrected after the note from Kerry Liles)

Thanks Kerry. I have been going through CTs for the past eight years, recording the interesting threads just in case the site shuts down tomorrow. This position caught my eye!
