  • Strongest Chess Playing Siblings?

On January 4, 2006, Susan Polgar ran a feature, 'Strongest Chess Playing Siblings?'.

    http://susanpolgar.blogspot.ca/2006/...-siblings.html

Given Susan ceased active play about that time, would the current answer to that same question today be the Muzychuk sisters? Anna, aged 23, is currently rated 2566 FIDE (with a 2606 apex) while her younger sister, Mariya, now 21, has now crossed the 2500 barrier at 2503. Can anyone think of two other siblings, male and/or female, who have higher current FIDE ratings?

Indeed! And yet both are only 'red' entries at Wikipedia's 'List of chess familites'. Another Tennyson ("not to reason why") moment I suppose.

LOL I went a harder way: from FIDE rating list got ~700 names with ratings >2566. There were several people with the same last names but search was not positive about their status. However, the last in the table were Zhigalko and then a wiki link popout too LOL

          In Canada : N. and S. Noritsyn. Total CFC rating 2608 + 2024 = 4632.

          2-nd best V. and T. Kaminski. Total: 2315 + 2182 = 4497.

I recall the Spraggetts (Kevin and Grant) would have had a pretty high combined rating when they were both active in Canada.

              Talking about strong chessplayer families...
NFL football has the Mannings, Major League Baseball has the Griffeys and Alomars, Hockey has the Howes and Hulls, but are there any high-level chess parent-child combos? Or do GM's tend to discourage their offspring from following in their footsteps?

Yes, you are right. I just checked active players in last 5 years. So it should be:
                K. and G. Spraggett 2618 + 2377 = 4995
                N. and S. Noritsyn 2608 + 2024 = 4632
                V. and T. Kaminski 2315 + 2182 = 4497.

                  N. and S. Noritsyn 2608 + 2024 = 4632
                  R. and F. South 2312 + 2289 = 4601
                  V. and T. Kaminski 2315 + 2182 = 4497

Canadian father/son: how about the Bluvshteins (Ilia and Mark)? Irwin (inactive since about 2005) and Samuel Lipnowski?
Canadian siblings: Abe and Harry Yanofsky would be quite high if they had ratings at the time.

I remember a year when Abe and Harry Yanofsky played in the Manitoba Open. Unless my memory is playing tricks.

                        Father/son:
                        M. and I. Bluvshtein 2632 + 2218 = 4850
                        V. and M. Plotkin 2426 + 2208 = 4634

Good additions Tom, I don't have an old CFC magazine with me but there was also:
                          Todd and David Southam 24XX + 2347= 47XX

How about the Klitschko brothers? Who would dare tell them, to their faces, that their ratings aren't high enough to qualify? :)
