I believe this makes Harmony Canada's 4th ever WYCC Champion. Jeff Sarwer won the U10 Boys (not called Open then) in its inaugural year, 1986, as an 8-year-old (since an U8 section wasn't introduced until 20 years later in 2006) and his 10-year-old sister, Julia, won the U10 Girls that same year. Unless I'm mistaken, we didn't produce another winner until 2010 when Jason Cao won the U10 Open.

For the record, Harmony is the U8 Girls World Champion on both 1st tie-break (head-to-head) and 2nd tie-break (most wins). The other girl with 9/11, Mungunzul Bat-Erdene, from Mongolia, lost to Harmony in the very 1st round and gave up 2 draws in R9 & R10.

I see that Wikipedia now has Harmony's name permanently etched in its WYCC list of historical winners.

Congratulations to Harmony Zhu for a well-deserved victory.

May I present the pivotal round 11 game for posterity.

Congratulations also to her parents father Todd.
Lastly, congratulations to her "white coach". Now I know why she plays the Accelerated Dragon.

This means it is time to sharpen the fangs against the Dragon. Watch out Bob Gilanders.

The story, with photos, made the CBC National News last night. Well done Harmony.

I stumbled upon this 27 & 1/2 year-old 'Ottawa Citizen' article by Janet McFarland on Canada's first two WYCC winners, Jeff and Julia Sarwer, that may interest some. Not the most flattering picture of Jeff, who presumably had recently undergone one of his father's annual shearings since Jeff didn't sport his custom long locks, but nonetheless a good read. Perhaps there's no other Canadain chess player (than Jeff Sarwer) who could have uttered, with great conviction, Marlon Brando's famous 'On The Waterfront' line, "I could have been a contender".
