(Minor point, Gordon: Vasil is the new RA Chess Club Champion - there can't be an Ottawa champion without there being an Ottawa Closed held)

[edit: an Ottawa Closed would not necessarily only draw entrants from RA CC members - strong players who live in the Ottawa area, who are not RA CC members, would include Deen Hergott, Miladin Djerkovic, Gordon Taylor and Wayne Barclay, if any of these people chose to play, should an Ottawa Closed be held again. Tom O'Donnell now lives in Prescott, so I'm not at all sure he'd be interested, if invited.]

The last Ottawa Closed, I recall, was held at the RA years ago on days/nights other than on Thursday (one time long ago I think one may have been held in Strategy Games' basement, on Bank St.). The main problem, if the RA club organizes another Ottawa Closed, would be covering costs, especially any contribution to a prize fund. This, I think, is likely the main reason why there hasn't been an Ottawa Closed in a long time (the last time one of its organizers generously helped with the prize fund, if I recall correctly - not sure if it was mainly an RA club Executive effort). Another reason may be that aside from winning prize money and perhaps receiving a FIDE & CFC rating boost, an Ottawa Closed winner in the past hasn't qualified for anything, such as a (currently non-existing) Eastern Ontario Closed, which in turn would qualify its winner to be in the Ontario Closed. However, an Ottawa Closed winner might somehow be helped by organizers to get their name in the newspapers, or have their name on a trophy, if nothing else (on top of winning prize money and possibly getting a rating boost).

[edit: regarding any hypothetical Eastern Ontario Closed, its entries would not necessarily have to come just from Ottawa - IM Tom O'Donnell, Frank Dixon, Peter Sibbald and Brian Profit are just some players (who are of at the least 1900 CFC strength) from outside of Ottawa who might possibly be interested in playing, if such an event is ever held. The winner of any Eastern Ontario Closed reserve section might be allowed to qualify for the top section of the following year's Eastern Ontario Closed (a similar idea could be used to reward any future Ottawa Closed reserve section winner).]

I think I'd likely be game to be at least a player in any near-future Ottawa Closed, if I qualified. At least one time when an Ottawa Closed was held at the RA, it was FIDE rated, and there was even a Reserve section, which would help better fund the top section's prizes with entry fees.

I believe we could raise at least $1,000 in prize money for a small elite event of, say, the top 8 players to apply, played on Sunday afternoons at the RA over 7 weeks. Would there be any interest among the top players?

Just a guess (based on past Ottawa Closeds), but you'd probably get interest from many of the masters (and experts) from the RA club (alone). Djerkovic used to play in Ottawa Closed events, too. Hergott is thinking of making a comeback of sorts (he's at least given simul(s) in Gatineau).
