General Guidelines
---- Nous avons besoin d'un traduction français!
Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
Re : Olympic Update: Committee Selections, Captains
These are very interesting choices! It will definitely be the strongest national team Canada ever had (if GMs Kovalyov, Hansen and Sambuev accepted to play).
Congratulations to Qiyu Zhou on her selection and to Jackie and Lali as alternates on the Canadian women's team.
And of course to Leonid Gherzhoy and alternates Nikolay and Thomas on the men's.
Re: Re : Olympic Update: Committee Selections, Captains
Unless the format has changed, a team is only 5 players. The second alternative which was picked must be if one of the first 5 declines the invitation.
It's hard to argue with the first 5 players for the national team.
Of course, the board order will be very important.
Re: Re : Olympic Update: Committee Selections, Captains
I believe that Aman Hambleton is on the team though I have not heard that he has accepted yet. By my reading of the rules he should let us know within a week. The selection committee was working on the assumption that he would be the third player based on rating after Kevin Spraggett declined his invitation in a timely manner.

All three seemed quite positively disposed toward playing in the discussions leading up to this point. My understanding is that some conditions were asked for and will be met or exceeded thanks to our very generous sponsor of the players.
We are in discussions with another possible major olympiad sponsor and there have already been a few donations to the Olympiad fund along with advertising of fundraisers. Thanks to the FQE-CFC agreement and the book deal with the CMA along with some efficiencies and reduced costs we should be able to cover the costs of the Olympiad team without going into deficit even if we run into a few unanticipated problems along the way.
Re: Re : Olympic Update: Committee Selections, Captains
We have invited Aman Hambleton (pending), along with Kovalyov (confirmed!!) Sambuev (confirmed!!) and Hansen (pending), and now Gerzhoy (pending).
For the Women we have invited Yuanling Yuan (pending), Natalia Khoudgarian (confirmed!!) Nava Starr (confirmed!!) and Alexandra Botez (pending) and now Qiyu Zhou (pending).
Barring a wave of declinations these will be our 2 strongest teams ever. I am thrilled by this prospect!

904.
b) Selection of Players:
The composition of the Teams shall be determined by rating (907) and the Selection Committee no later than 165 days before the start of the Olympiad.
906. Selection of the players
a) Eligibility: Players are eligible to play on a Canadian Team if they are:
i) A Canadian Citizen or a permanent resident of Canada. Proof of status must be provided to the CFC Executive when a player accepts a position on a Team.
ii) A member in good standing of the CFC and the affiliated provincial association in the province of residence (if one exists) at the time of selection.
iii) Have played at least 10 regular CFC rated or FIDE rated games during the year prior to the start of the selection process (which begins 180 days before the start of the Olympiad).
b) National Team: [Motion Smith/Jaeger 2007-08 GL6, amendment of original Craver/Gillanders motion] The National Team shall consist of five players, as follows:
i) The Canadian Champion, as of 180 days before the start of the Olympiad.
ii) The three highest rated players on the Selection Rating List.
iii) One player decided upon by the Selection Committee.
c) Women’s Team: The Women’s Team shall consist of five players, as follows:
i) The Canadian Womens Champion, as of 180 days before the start of the Olympiad.
ii) The three highest rated female players on the Selection Rating list.
iii) One player decided upon by the Selection Committee.
d) Notification: Players shall be notified of their selection by the CFC Executive no later than 150 days before the start of the Olympiad.
e) Acceptance: Players shall notify the CFC Executive of their intention to play by no later than 120 days before the start of the Olympiad.
f) Replacements: If a player either declines the invitation or withdraws after indicating his or her intention to participate as a member of the National or Women's team {911}, a replacement player shall be notified as soon as practicable and shall have one week after being notified to inform the CFC of his or her intention to play. [Motion 2011M Bluvshtein/Zeromskis]
907. Selection Ratings
Selection of players for the Teams by rating shall be based on the average of the player’s highest CFC rating and highest FIDE rating during the year prior to the start of the selection process (which begins 180 days before the start of the Olympiad).
a) Established CFC and FIDE ratings shall be used to determine team selection.
b) The CFC shall publish, with each rating update, a list of the top 10 Selection Ratings and the top 10 Selection Ratings of female players.
911. Replacements
[Motion 2011N] Once all members of the Canadian Delegation to the Olympiad have been determined:
a) If a player declines or withdraws, he or she shall be replaced by the next player on the Selection Committee List. If the Selection Committee List is exhausted, the next player on the Selection Rating List shall be invited.
b) If a Team Captain declines or withdraws, he or she shall be replaced by the runner-up in the vote for Team Captain.
c) If any other member of the Canadian Delegation declines or withdraws, the CFC Executive shall appoint a replacement.
By my interpretation the second replacement procedure in section 911 does not kick in until all members of the Olympiad team have been determined.
Actually I guess I should say that the second replacement procedure does not kick in until all members of the Canadian delegation have been determined. As has been the case in all my dealings with the arcana of the handbook this could use some tightening up of the language used.
Aman Hambleton deserves to be on the team if he wants to be. My information is that the selection committee was told that Aman was on the list by rating after Kevin Spraggett declined and their selections were based on Aman already being on the team.
I am sure someone will point out any flaws in my reasoning.

Does that mean the alternatives only go if someone is not able to attend? The announcement is unclear.
You are correct. The selection committee gets one pick of who is on the team though all three of their picks could potentially be on the team if those ahead of them backed out. If anyone backs out once the Canadian delegation is set (including players, captains, HOD and so on) then the alternates go. The Canadian delegation is just about set or should be shortly. If someone declined to play, the next person on the list by rating is Nikolay Noritsyn. He is also the next player on the list as chosen by the selection committee.
