  • NAYCC Head of Delegation, Provisional Selection Order of Official Reps

We have appointed a head of delegation for the North American Youth Chess Championship: Victoria Doknjas. Victoria is a well known chess organizer from British Columbia and the mother of three boys who will be attending the tournament.

Players who finished first, second and third in CYCC 2013 have the possibility of being designated the official representative for either the 2014 North American Youth Chess Championship or the 2014 Pan Am Youth Chess Championship. The following list represents the players who I believe have priority as the official representatives for these tournaments. Champions who attended WYCC as official players are not listed. That does not mean that they can't become official players but we have to give the second and third place finishers first opportunity as is implied in our handbook. Expressions of interest are for the NAYCC which runs June 12th through June 16.

We are not going to support the Pan Am Youth Chess Championship because it conflicts with CYCC 2014 in Montreal. When I say we are not going to support it, that does not mean that you will not be allowed to go as an official representative if you are entitled. If you do go to the Pan Am tournament, you will not be prevented from going to WYCC but you will be required to pay extra fees as a player who did not attend CYCC and there are extra requirements which you will have to meet in order for your application to go to WYCC to go ahead. This year's winners at CYCC will have a compressed time frame with respect to WYCC so we expect things to be even more hectic this year than last year with the entry deadline possibly falling before the end of CYCC. In the long run we may need to move CYCC earlier in the year in order to avoid such time crunches.

At the moment the website for the hosts of the North American Youth Chess Championships says that they are requiring players to register through their federation with the exception of Americans who can register directly on the tournament website. The organizers have indicated to our executive director that they will allow Canadians to register directly through the website despite what the website says.

[This has been confirmed by an email from the organizer, Beatriz Marinello, to the CFC office]

Re: NAYCC Head of Delegation, Provisional Selection Order of Official Reps

This list was prepared without access to player birth dates so I inferred the section that players belonged in based on previous participation in age related tournaments. There may be players that I incorrectly categorized based on this. There are additional players who might qualify for official player status in under 18 open or other sections if higher ranked players decline to participate (there was a five way tie for 3rd place with Konstantin Semianiuk winning the playoff and David Itkin being ranked highest on tie break).

CONFIRMED: Canadians can register directly on the NAYCC website

At the moment the website for the hosts of the North American Youth Chess Championships says that they are requiring players to register through their federation with the exception of Americans who can register directly on the tournament website. The organizers have indicated to our executive director that they will allow Canadians to register directly through the website despite what the website says.

This has been confirmed by an email from the organizer, Beatriz Marinello, to the CFC office and one of the parents from Windsor George Zhou.

Canadians wishing to register for NAYCC will have to go directly through the tournament website. There will be no provision for entering through the CFC office.

        Tournament website:

Beatriz Marinello, the chief organizer of this event has indicated that players who are official players will need to provide a copy of their hotel receipt in order to obtain the benefit of being selected an official player which is half of their hotel (presumably at the official hotel) for four nights. Tournament entry fees and the cost of food will be the responsibility of the players.

          NAYCC players with personal rights

Note that the following players with a personal right at NAYCC are entitled to play and receive the same consideration as the official players which is the cost of half of a hotel room in the official hotel. If I am missing anyone please let me know.

Sergei Noritsyn clear 1st 2013 NAYCC

Maybe Kevin Wan? He won the CYCC but didn't go to the UAE. Would he be eligible? I mean is his trip free? I have a lesson with him in a few hours and can relay my findings since I think he doesn't read Chesstalk.

Kevin Wan is listed above. He would not receive a free trip but could receive official player status which would pay for half of the hotel room or the equivalent of two nights out of four that the organizers are paying for. He is listed as second in line in what I believe is his section (under 14 open) in NAYCC.

I have sent you a private message.

Organizers at NAYCC pay for four nights of shared accommodation

Victoria Doknjas our head of delegation cautioned me that I may have been unclear in my previous post. Official reps only receive 4 nights of free shared accommodations, which is equivalent to 2 nights free, assuming the official rep is sharing room with their parent.

If you plan to stay 5 nights with a parent you only get reimbursed for 2 of them which is half the cost of the room for the four nights that the organizers are covering.

PLEASE NOTE: ONLY USA AND CANADIAN PLAYERS CAN REGISTER DIRECTLY THROUGH THE WEBSITE. PLAYERS FROM BERMUDA AND MEXICO SHOULD REGISTER THROUGH THEIR FEDERATION. IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS, PLEASE EMAIL US AT INFO@CHESSEDUCATORS.COM

Only the official representatives of each country will be provided free accommodation in shared double occupancy at the official hotels for up to 4 nights.

Those who wish single occupancy may pay the difference. No other expenses are the responsibility of the organizers of the event. International participants are requested to carry sufficient medical cover, and inform the organizers of any preexisting medical conditions in advance.

Tiebreaks are the responsibility of the Executive and the criteria that we have decided upon for official players are as follows:

                  PRIORITY LIST
                  1. CYCC champion in same age group who didn't go to WYCC as official player.
                  2. Second place CYCC player in same age group who didn't go to WYCC as official player
                  3. CYCC champion moving up age group who didn't go to WYCC as official player.
                  4. Second place CYCC player moving up age group who didn't go to WYCC as official player
                  5. Third place CYCC player in same age group who didn't go to WYCC as official player
                  6. Third place CYCC player moving up an age group who didn't go to WYCC as official player
                  7. Highest placing CYCC player whether in the same age group or moving up who did not go to WYCC as official player. Ties are resolved by highest rating.
                  8. Anyone in the appropriate age group who played in CYCC.
                  9. Anyone in the appropriate age group.

                  CFC HANDBOOK

[Motion 2011-B moved by Vladimir Birarov, seconded by Valer Demian]
                  INVITED PLAYERS
                  a) Canadian Youth Chess Championship (CYCC) is a qualifier to international youth chess competitions.
Top 3 finishers in each section are qualified to become official representatives for:
                  1) World Youth Chess Championship (WYCC);
                  2) Pan American Youth Chess Championship;
                  3) North American Youth Chess Championship.
If the winner is unable to participate, the second place finisher shall be invited to go in his place. If the second place finisher also declines, the highest finisher in the tournament who is willing to participate in the world event (if not rejected by CFC Executive due to the sub paragraph (d)), shall be selected. The CFC Board of Directors shall use an appropriate tie-breaking method to break ties if required to determine the order of finish.
All official representatives to WYCC should receive financial support from CFC to reduce their travel expenses.
                  b) Players with the Special Rights according to FIDE rules will be eligible to participate at WYCC notwithstanding their participation at CYCC. In case of participation at CYCC, CFC will pay the cost of transportation for such players to WYCC in full.
