We have appointed a head of delegation for the North American Youth Chess Championship: Victoria Doknjas. Victoria is a well known chess organizer from British Columbia and the mother of three boys who will be attending the tournament.
Players who finished first, second and third in CYCC 2013 have the possibility of being designated the official representative for either the 2014 North American Youth Chess Championship or the 2014 Pan Am Youth Chess Championship. The following list represents the players who I believe have priority as the official representatives for these tournaments. Champions who attended WYCC as official players are not listed. That does not mean that they can't become official players but we have to give the second and third place finishers first opportunity as is implied in our handbook. Expressions of interest are for the NAYCC which runs June 12th through June 16.
We are not going to support the Pan Am Youth Chess Championship because it conflicts with CYCC 2014 in Montreal. When I say we are not going to support it, that does not mean that you will not be allowed to go as an official representative if you are entitled. If you do go to the Pan Am tournament, you will not be prevented from going to WYCC but you will be required to pay extra fees as a player who did not attend CYCC and there are extra requirements which you will have to meet in order for your application to go to WYCC to go ahead. This year's winners at CYCC will have a compressed time frame with respect to WYCC so we expect things to be even more hectic this year than last year with the entry deadline possibly falling before the end of CYCC. In the long run we may need to move CYCC earlier in the year in order to avoid such time crunches.
At the moment the website for the hosts of the North American Youth Chess Championships says that they are requiring players to register through their federation with the exception of Americans who can register directly on the tournament website. The organizers have indicated to our executive director that they will allow Canadians to register directly through the website despite what the website says.
