  • 9th Annual Kitchener Chess Festival July 30 - August 4

In addition to the Canadian Amateur, 9th Annual Kitchener Chess Festival will feature the first ever North American U20 Championships and an expanded Canadian Veterans/Seniors Championship. Veterans is the new term for 50 and the Seniors now begins at 65 years of age.

Most of the events run from August 1-4, totalling 7 rounds. The North American Junior is a 9 rounder for which the arrival day is July 30 and the first game is 10am on July 31. Nine round GM and WGM norms are at stake for the winners.

Maybe the first "North American U20" in name, but Canadians played in the US Junior in the 1960's (e.g. Lawrence Day in 1969).

This is great news! I hope to see some Canadian players score norms or win titles :)

There still is one thing I don't understand : what prizes do the organizers give back from the (rather high) entry fees? Is it like the NAYCC, where each country can have official representatives with free lodging? Or do the winners get their expenses paid for the Pan-Am Junior (flight, etc.)?

Yes Felix, we have hosting obligations. FIDE America also charges $70 per player for their regional U20 competitions. This being the first one, there is also great uncertainty as to the turn out. So we are taking a substantial risk by staging the event in a hotel ballroom.

Thanks for the reply. The entry fees seem reasonable, given all this :)
I am sure finding the players won't be a problem, especially if some players have the accommodation paid and norms are possible.

We keep on ruining the GM and IM title with these tournaments. What a pity.

In another thread you're saying that the NAYCC U18 open is A good chance for the IM title and now you're saying What a pity

                  Correct.

A good chance for the IM title for the undeserving player. A pity for the reputation of the GM/IM title.
