General Guidelines
---- Nous avons besoin d'un traduction français!
Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
This makes your side look desperate. You might want to reconsider horse-trading on the pages of ChessTalk as a strategy.
Nothing to do with sides or strategy or "desperation" , it is a sincere offer on my part as an individual. As a moderator you may want to reconsider pinning motives on me.

Some of the harshest criticism of Ilyumzhinov from my point of view is the ugly horse-trading and arm-twisting for votes. Whatever your motives are, this latest offer sounds much the same and tars the candidate you support with the same brush. Believe me, I'm trying to be diplomatic here. It surprises me that you don't see this.
Dogs will bark, but the caravan of chess moves on.

Well I am sorry see you it as "ugly horse trading" we will have to agree to disagree. My offer has more to do with doing good for Canadian chess than anything else.
Paul, all you need to do is a search using "above the/international law" and the "US" in the same sentence and you will find dozens of links, scholarly articles and such about the "hateful" claim I've made. Give me a break ... it might be the subject of debate but I should hardly censor myself on that account.

Sid,
You are truly thick-skinned to be debating in a cesspit! Nigel as a moderator, is hardly moderate! He is highly opinionated with his own agenda.
All that aside, there is a great deal that can be done for chess without dealing with the CFC.
The recent events in Ukraine are an excellent example. The incineration of protestors in Odessa by a violent mob, the bombing of civilians, schools, hospitals, the torment and killing of journalists, etc., etc., meet with a practical deafening silence by the corporate media here in Canada. You'd think they'd care about journalists hit by artillery from the Kiev regime and its "militias". When the PM of Ukraine calls Russians "sub-humans" and suggest that they be "eliminated" ... and this is passed over in silence by the media, what should one think?
So too, in the UK, for example, when 50,000 people demonstrated outside the BBC just this week against the awful coverage of the cruel austerity policies of the Westminister regime .. there was dead silence from the BBC itself. One could go on. The alternate media/media reform movement has plenty more.
These antediluvian views are simply re-gurgitating the government's own cold war nostalgia perspective. There is not critical journalistic distance at all. And that's what we should get from an "independent and free press". The truth is that the "press" is free for those who own one. And Canada has some of the highest media concentration (few owners with vast ownership) around.
Sorry, my fault for not wording my questions accurately. What I'm interested in knowing is as follows:
1. What Canadian news organizations (i.e. their names) fall into your 'obsequious corporate media' classification?
2. Why do you think these organizations belong there?
"We hang the petty thieves and appoint the great ones to public office." - Aesop
"Only the dead have seen the end of war." - Plato
"If once a man indulges himself in murder, very soon he comes to think little of robbing; and from robbing he comes next to drinking and Sabbath-breaking, and from that to incivility and procrastination." - Thomas De Quincey
... It's really a waste of time to argue over things that have already been decided.
May I conclude from this that you're not a fan of historians?

Sid, the Kasparov campaign has made a point of disavowing your statements and actions. If I am to believe their communications then Kasparov's campaign has never made any attempt to reach us with so much as an email. I find this curious. He cut short an African campaign swing to personally fly to Puerto Rico on a private jet (a flight worth in the neighborhood of $50,000) in an ultimately futile effort to avert a vote of the Puerto Rican equivalent of the CFC that affirmed Kirsan as their choice for FIDE president. He couldn't be interested enough in Canada to have an aide fire off an email to us in the year or so that he has been running for FIDE president? He has been next door in New York for how long? It is now our failing because he couldn't be bothered to have one of his underlings contact us. I didn't realize that it was the responsibility of the CFC executive to run the Kasparov campaign for him. Wow.
I guess we would have talked to a member of the Kasparov campaign in Michael K if some of the pro-Kasparov governors hadn't derailed the process by insisting that only the governors had the right to make such a decision. We were a day or two away from a Skype conference call when that storm surfaced.
We are looking into the Gabon and Afghanistan thing.
I think your most recent posting and offer are remarkably generous
considering the rather shabby treatment you have been afforded here.
Kudos to you for trying to rise above all the rhetoric and "hurt feelings".
Unfortunately, the CFC has a long history of biting any helping hand;
I hope that changes but I am not sure holding my breath is a good plan.
Let us contract out the running of CFC to a private company, specifying goals to be achieved and processes to be followed, and leaving all other operational decisions in their hands; if the private company falls short of its mandate within a specified period of time, we could always go back to status quo...

Vlad thank you for your consideration, please feel free to phone Michael K any time if you have any reservations about the seriousness of my offer or the help i would get from them or if you would like unequivocal proof of what transpired in Afghanistan and Gabon. Michael has suggested that a conversation with him could be fruitful and may put aside misunderstandings.

Actualy, that IS the status quo. We contracted out the day-to-day operations. You just need to read other threads here to see how well that's working out.
