  • Happy Canada Day!

    To everyone I wish you all a happy Canada Day.

    As a bit of Canada Day trivia, I'm asking people what chess game, player, opening, event, or etc, most people would think of when asked to think of Chess and Canada.

    And please exclude the current FIDE Election. I'm looking for positive points. Thanks.

    Happy Canada Day!

    These are my humble suggestions for the Top-3 events:

    1) Montreal 1979: an incredible performance by Tal (which proved again to his lifelong fans everywhere that he would always be brilliant as long as he is reasonably healthy), plus Karpov at the top of his game.

    2) Keres' death en route from Vancouver (1975).

    3) Igor Ivanov running across the airfield in Gander (198?).

    Edit: ChessTalk filters out 'plus' signs in posts?

      Maybe add the following ...

      3.5) Kevin Spraggett, the only Canadian to have ever qualified for the Candidates, defeats Andrei Sokolov in a Candidates Match in the late 1980's and achieves the highest result of a Canadian in the World Championship cycle to date;

        For Canadian openings, it's got to be 1...g6 (against almost anything), the RAT!

          My selection is personal. The three things that remind me most of Canadian chess and which had a great influence on me are:

          (1) The book 100 Years of Chess in Canada by D.A. Yanofsky (1967)

          (2) Frank Anderson’s chess column in the Hamilton Spectator 1955-1960

          (3) The Hart House Chess Club 1960-1967
