  • 2014 Fort McMurray Open, 30 compete for biggest 1st prize in 5 years!

This past weekend I had the pleasure of attending the second annual Fort McMurray Open. Even though my tournament didn't go as well as I hoped, it was really a great pleasure attending the event.
First, the prizes were great and total $4800 including $1500 for first, which was the largest first prize in Alberta since the 2009 Canadian Open.
The organizer-Jina Burn created a great atmosphere for everyone which included tons and tons of food available for all the participants, great playing conditions and many other small things which create a great tournament.
In the end the 30 player event had a five way tie for first between: Diwen Shi, IM Edward Porper, David Miller, FM Vladimir Pechenkin and NM Aaron Sequillion with 4/5 each. The 14 year old Diwen took the trophy as his tie-breaks were the best.
I really hope that this tournament will become traditional as it is a great addition to Alberta and Canadian tournament scene!

Congratulations for building up this event, especially the part about nice playing conditions. Nice to see 5 new members too.
