  • Google Book Searches

I just discovered this fascinating part of google. And of course,I checked
it re chess books. It looks like you can find complete copies(copies of originals) of chess books, etc from the 19th century. For example

Analysis of the Game of Chess by Philidor 1826
    http://books.google.ca/books?id=c8kC...es&lr=#PPA1,M1

The Chess-Player's Handbook: A Popular and Scientific Introduction
    by Howard Staunton 1874
    http://books.google.ca/books?id=kGwZ...es&lr=#PPP1,M1

Chess Strategy: A Collection of the Most Beautiful Chess Problems
    by John Brown 1865

    http://books.google.ca/books?id=SPiN...wn&lr=#PPP5,M1

There are more. Just look for them if you are interested.

The McGill rare books collection has an original Philidor (at least they used to).

According to the McGill Library catalogue, it has about a dozen Philidor reproductions (not originals)(on chess) and others (same author) on music.

(clicking on "Find It" will take you to an electronic version of the book (might not be accessible to non-McGill users))

well it looks like it is no longer there apart from ebook versions from various other copies. The one I saw ~30+ years ago was Analyse du jeu des échecs.

Yes, access to the ebook is limited to McGill users. A bit odd if versions are available through Google books.
