General Guidelines
---- Nous avons besoin d'un traduction français!
Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
In case Bob doesn't have time to post a reply.... he posted on Facebook...
The Quebec Provincial Chess Association (FQE), the organizer of the tournament, asked me if I would "blog" my section of the tournament for the 9 rounds (I have done this for the last 3 week-long major July tournaments I've played in, in various large Canadian cities). I agreed (they gave me free entry to the tournament in return - bit of a perk for doing something I enjoy doing). So the plan is for me to have my "Canadian Open U 2000 Blog (Armstrong)" on the FQE website. I completed my Blog # 1 early this morning, and sent it off to the FQE staff person working with me. So the plan is for him to post it sometime later today. Once it is posted, I will then provide a link here, for those daring enough to try to wade through my diary-like ramblings.
Di you have a ''blog'' for this year Canadian Open 2014 ?
Hi Jean:
Short answer: YES!
But with some changes:
1. I am going beyond just text, to include pics and games (with maybe a game viewer capacity);
2. It will not be posted on CMA's Chesstalk here this time (thanks to Larry for his consent for prior years);
3. The reason is that I have agreed this year with the FQE to do the blog for them. So it is to be posted on the FQE website, on the page "Follow the tournament". As soon as it is up, I will post a link here.
4. My Blog # 1 (The Day Prior) is now in the hands of the FQE staff person who is working with me to do the website postings, Roman. I spoke with him mid-morning, and he is shooting to get my blog up sometime soon (he had hoped by noon, but was involved in on-site registrations this morning). As I said, as soon as it is up, I will post a link to it. I believe there will be capacity for viewers to comment, etc. and discuss the blog content.
5. Blog # 2 (Day 1/Rd. 1 - Today) is already partly prepared in draft form, needing the results of today to complete it. Rd. 1 is at 1:00 PM today. So I am shooting to get my blog # 2 to Roman by 11:00 PM, and he said he can usually get it posted before midnight (if I am able to meet our mutual deadline - depends a lot of the posting of the results on the website, which I need to complete the day's blog).
Thanks for your interest. I hope you, and others, will enjoy it. In prior years I have received a lot of encouragement to keep doing it, and this has been shown by the fact that I average about 500 views per blog (over usually 8-10 blogs). This was the last three years or so when it was posted here on CT. I hope I will get feedback on the different format as well this time.

I have updated the links on the follow page of the website.
The U2000 blog isn't up yet but it will be as soon as the first round starts, I'm kind of running everywhere here.
Bd. 1 Roman Sapozhnikov - Sergei Tiviakov
Bd. 2 Anton Kovalyov - Francois Leveille
Bd. 3 Victor Plotkin - Robin van Kampen
Bd. 4 Eric Hansen - Kevin Gentes

Hi Roman:
Thanks for putting the Blog link on the "Follow the tournament" page.
But it is not working for me - doesn't take me to Blog # 1. Is it working for anyone else?
Can you advise what is wrong? Could you take a shot at fixing it if it is not set up correctly?
Re: Canadian Open U 2000 Blog (Armstrong) - Not Working?
Today at the Canadian Open, the computer containing the sections B and C failed us.
We are done with the reconstruction of the section B. We did it from scratch to ensure that no corruption remains in the file. Please check that your score is correct. The last number is the tiebbreak, you can ignore it.
