  • VERY old historic chess columns online...

For you chess historians - issues of the "Canadian Illustrated News" are available free of charge online (1869-1883). There was usually a chess column (at least fro the late 1870's onward) on one of the last pages of each issue.

Select the year, month, and issue you want, and then the page image. Subsequent pages can be viewed by clicking on "Pages suivantes" at the bottom of the screen.

Other old Quebec-based publications (and old maps) can be selected from

(there is usually someplace to click for "English" for the franco-impaired :-) )

    Thanks Hugh,

This is probably the best Canadian chess column of the era. I considered photocopying and scanning the microfiche at the library.

I also remember seeing a group 'photo' of chessplayers at a tournament. Maybe an individual portrait, too.

        Hugh,
What a wonderful site! I am going to go to this site frequently to unearth some of the treasures that I'm sure must be there.

        Thanks for posting this.
