You're correct, of course. It is far better to learn lines the players figured out in a few minutes or seconds than it is to learn lines people may have spent days working out. The road to success.
    Ooooh... look, a typo.

I don't understand the sarcasm. There's a database of correspondence games available somewhere. So people can go there and have a look if they wish so.

What's the problem? Why bother Hugh Brodie with that?

I sense some frustration. Is correspondence chess is too marginal to your taste? Or maybe I'm completely wrong and misread your post.

      Exchange. Games predated databases.

In case you missed the discussion, Hugh brought it up. You have to keep up and not fall behind.

Regarding your trying to needle me on correspondence chess, I notice Jean often uses his Correspondence title in place of his FIDE title. Understandable because the correspondence title is worth more than the FIDE title. They almost hand out the FIDE titles as door prizes these days.

Hugh, you and I are going to have to stop discussing correspondence chess. It's more fun than I can handle today. ;);)

I have nothing against correspondence chess. It's just not part of my database. If you (or someone else) wants to start up a Canadian database devoted to correspondence chess - go ahead. :-)

First, the issue was brought up by Roger Patterson. First answer right after Hugh Brodie's post. So no, Hugh did not brought it up. Maybe YOU should try to keep up.

Secondly, Jean Hébert is probably using his correspondence title because he's a correspondence GM and 'only' IM in over the board play. I'm quite sure that if Jean was a GM in OTB chess, we would have never heard about his correspondence title.

You should really discuss the reasons with Jean. I don't even pretend to know. All I know is Jean has been a top player in Canada for decades.

They already have correspondence databases. Tim Harding had the databases, the ICCF has databases and I think Chessbase also sold correspondence databases or games.

                  I don't want to re-invent the wheel.

Well, your previous message was quite clear. You were pretending that Jean Hébert is using his ICCF title because it's supposedly worth more than a FIDE title. So again, you seem to do a little bit of projection by casting upon me some of the things you're actually doing. Interesting.

I think the explanation is so simple (GM vs. IM) that there's nothing to pretend, discuss or verify.

Of course the ICCF GM title is worth more than the FIDE IM title. (Note to ICCF title holders. Don't take this discussion seriously. I do have respect for your titles.)

I will tell you something I find to be true. While the titles are given for life, once a player can no longer play up to the level his title represents, other than for the old days, what good is the title? I have an ICCF SIM title (half way between an IM and GM) but with age I'm not playing at the level anymore. It's a snapshot in time.

The first of the top 4 boards to finish tonight is a very nice 2 piece sac win by Anton Kovalyov vs Bator Sambuev. You can view same at:

The 2nd game to finish on those top 4 boards is the FM Jason Cao vs John Fedorowicz match. Jason could only draw his GM opponent tonight (:

The last game to finish was the Van Kampen vs Tiviakov game, a 76-move Scandinavian draw. This is the 2nd time Van Kampen has tried to crack Tiviakov's wont Scandinavian. The first was a 70-move draw at the 15th Unive Open in 2011.

Well, I would rather be an IM in OTB chess than a GM in correspondence chess. And I'm probably not the only one.

I have a hunch that's not something you will have to worry about.
