I'd love for the top-end title to be completely merit-based rather than rating-based - that takes inflation/deflation out of the process.

Something like, you are a "Super-GM" if you have:
    1. Played in a World Championship Match (not tournament)
    2. Finished in the Top-2 of a World Championship Tournament
    3. Won a Gold medal on Board 1 at the Olympiad
    4. Have at any time been the #1 rated player in the world (based on published ratings)

Note that #4 while based on ratings isn't tied to a specific rating threshold.

The same players tend to be near the top for a number of years. The idea isn't to make new titles almost impossible to obtain but to differentiate between the GM's who play at a very high level against the best of their peers.

Inflating the ratings without raising the bar for obtaining titles isn't maintaining the significance of the titles. Would you sooner be a GM like XXXXX or a GM like XXXXXXX?
