      Petrosian Memorial 2014

      Round Six
      November 10, 2014

The last game to finish is Leko-Inarkiev. Peter had his chances but the endgame that resulted had him with N and h-pawn against Ernesto’s three d-f-h pawns. Ernesto defends well and Peter keeps probing but finally offers the draw at move 62.

A lovely comment on the following game from Jonathan Tisdall:

Kramnik’s got a frying pan out and is chasing Morozevich around the room with it. So to speak..

      Petrosian Memorial 2014
      Round 6, Nov. 10, 2014
      Kramnik, Vladimir – Morozevich, Alexander
      E11 Bogo-Indian Defence, Grunfeld Variation

Aronian-Grischuk and Ding Liren-Gelfand are draws.

This gives the standing after Round 6 as:

      Grischuk 5
      Kramnik 4
      Aronian 3
      Ding Liren 3
      Gelfand 3
      Leko 2.5
      Inarkiev 2

with the final round pairings as

      Grischuk-Kramnik, Inarkiev-Aronian, Gelfand-Leko and Morozevich-Ding Liren.

So, tomorrow’s game between the leaders decides the tournament.

Then both head off to the just announced Tal Memorial speed tournament in Sochi. It takes place on the 13th and 14th of November.

        Morozevich-Ding Liren 0.5-0.5
        _________

So Grischuk wins the tournament. Kramnik said that he hadn’t expected a Catalan but decided to play sharply. He had played the line once before against Topalov in a rapid game and won. Unfortunately White has the option to repeat moves for a draw. He congratulated Sasha on winning the tournament and said he was in brilliant form.

If I am reading the Russian account correctly, Grischuk showed up for the game 12 minutes late but wasn’t penalized. Nobody else seems to have picked up on this, so let’s not mention it again. Conspiracy of silence. Band of brothers. On to the next tournament!

        Final Standing

        Grischuk 5.5
        Kramnik 4.5
        Gelfand 4
        Aronian 4
        Ding Liren 3.5
        Leko 2.5
        Inarkiev 2
        Morozevich 2
