General Guidelines
---- Nous avons besoin d'un traduction français!
Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
Also, the webzine shows her CFC membership expiring August 1, 2009.
Bob
I was going off the downloadable TD list, on which neither Bela nor her membership number appear. I was under the impression the TD list had all members, whether rated or not. Apparently I was wrong. As usual.
and then say I have said all I need to, BUT, you have not backed them up. I am willing to be convinced if you have any facts to present OR were these just accusations that were "off the cuff" in an attempt to cause speculation or denigrate the CFC or its officers/members/governors. That is the new politics in many places today. Throw enough s**t and some may stick. It doesn't matter if it is true or not. I am not saying you are wrong, I merely want some facts and not some picayune little unimportant detail either. I think it was a serious charge you made.
Motion 02-2: (Lyle Craver/Ken Craft)[/FONT]
Addition to CFC Bylaw 1, paragraph 13 concerning eligibility of members for CFC Governorship: Any provincially elected Governor found not to be a CFC member in good standing shall have his/her voting privileges suspended.
...trimmed
Most of the Governors are in a good standing or they are Life members. A new blog entry at webzine will help investigate every governor ;)
I think, it would be great to have TD's accomplishments in the CFC ID card.
Hugh, I brought you into this thread. I believe you have a high degree of integrity and the experience to be CFC Parliamentarian. Jon Berry would be another person I would place in this category.
Ken re. abuse of proxies- the argument all turns on how you defgne "abuse">
Re: Of course, it is easy to make accusations......
Hi Ken:
I wade in here with trepidation, but to give you some info, I think Chris previously posted that he felt one ( or more ) proxy holders failed to vote according to the proxy instructions. Chris can correct me if I'm wrong on this.
That would be one form of abuse. Another would be voting in a way you should reasonably know the proxy giver wouldn't support. The AGM is it currently stand is not an effective decision making model. We need to move to a virtual AGM.
I was going off the downloadable TD list, on which neither Bela nor her membership number appear. I was under the impression the TD list had all members, whether rated or not. Apparently I was wrong. As usual.
uggrrr...John emailed me this morning, asking why Bela wasn't on the TDlist of members.....so while I was investigating this mystery...(because she was on my TDlist)....he was posting on chesstalk.....so I have solved the mystery and was going to email John the answer.....but I may as well explain it to everyone here instead......but first let me say:
I had the pleasure to meet Bela at the AGM last year. She was there representing women as the CFC women's coordinator and addressed concerns related to the womens olympic team. So besides attending the AGM, her membership is current and she was a donor to the Olympic fund. I sure hope this recent interest in her CFC status was not intended as an attack on her character. :(
Back to the mystery,
I called Vince this morning for his help, and discovered the following:
The TDlist of memberships on the legacy site specifically excludes members who have no rating whatsoever (regular, active, FIDE). Troy did this way back when, so that non playing members would be excluded (there are a few membership types without rating privileges, ie. mag subscriptions).
The TDlist I was looking at is the one that Vince created for use with SwissSys software. It can be found in the SwissSys area, and we would prefer everyone use that one. It does have all the zero rated players. I believe Vince has excluded non rating types, but I will check that out.
So mystery solved. Okay ?

Ken, re. abuse of proxies- the argument all turns on how you define "abuse."
However, regardless how one defines abuse, I would still like to know what I missed at the meeting last July. One should not make blanket statements which cast aspersions on those running the meeting, Governors, members, etal., without more explanation. The way Chris did this leaves many wondering if the whole meeting was false and everyone there were crooks.
OK, I think I have made my point and this will be my last comment on this matter.
