General Guidelines
---- Nous avons besoin d'un traduction français!
Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
When is the Canadian Closed / Canadian Championships?
I am guessing our top players like Hansen, Kovalyov, Spraggett and soon to be Preotu have tournament schedules to prepare and short notice won't work if they already have prior commitments in place.
What an embarassing organization this CFC. Makes me wonder why our GM's still play under our flag. I certainly wouldn't.
Any timetable when the Canadian Championships will be announced?
I am about 90% confident the Canadian Closed will take place in July. We have received a bid that I expect will either be accepted or initiate a final call for other bids. Stay tuned.
I was obviously optimistic when I suggested that the Canadian Open location and dates should be in place by the end of November. We had an interested organizer, but I'm not sure if anything has advanced past that stage. If I am right about the Closed, then the Open would likely have to be held in August.

With respect to the Canadian Open, and shifting its traditional time, I would only say that re foreign GM's you will have to look at the dates available to some of them for a summer North American tour, as some of them do. Canada must be careful not to set up a conflict with some other tournament attractive to a 2015 summer touring GM.

There are not that many summer options available. If we put the Canadian Closed into the slot immediately after CYCC then we have to go with a Canadian Open in August. We don't want a conflict with the Quebec Open so the time frame is already squeezed a bit.
Anyone who wants to organize a Canadian Closed bid should let us know and submit a bid within two weeks or we will go with the only bid currently on the table.

I think the Canadian closed could be planned with NO consideration whatever of the CYCC.
At some point these high level zonal events have to be decoupled from the kids events. If kids qualify they should make a choice which one they want enter.
Working around the kids events seems to me like the tail wagging the dog.
A Canadian closed doesn't have to be more than a dozen players.

Hi Gary:
I think that you are only theoretically right.......the problem is that the organizer budget depends to some significant degree on registration revenues, and 12 players doesn't cut it.......will be a loss. That is why we have such great difficulty with organizing the Can. Closed, the Women's Can. Closed, and the Can. Seniors' Closed........insufficient revenue to the organizers. This is not the case for the CYCC, where it is much easier to find sponsors to cover expenses, re tournaments for KIDS.
These Closed's need to be Open (with a floor rating), to attract as many players as possible, to try to get sufficient revenue that expenses are covered, with some help from elsewhere (and some salary to the organizers would help to keep them interested in future).

The Canadian Closed used to be a 16 player round-robin and it was unfair. Lower rated provincial/regional champions got in over rising masters in the big urban centres. On the other hand, the recent 60 player swisses with players as low as 2000 affected the final standings and who got norms. To only include those who have a chance of winning a top finish, should there be a 36 player maximum? Should the tournament be a master training class for rising juniors? For players under 2300 or even 2350, should only allow provincial/regional champions, titled players, Canadian Junior/women/senior champions? Or include but have double entry fee for 2200s, triple for 2100, quattro for 2000s? Many questions, but it comes down to having dedicated volunteers, corporate sponsors, a tv deal.

It could be but it would probably be dumb on the part of organizers to do that. CYCC takes place one day after the World Open and is done before the next weekend (Monday through Thursday).

A Canadian Closed with a dozen players would probably lose around $10,000 unless we changed the model significantly. In any case we need twelve rounds for a zonal apparently.

When will the dates and logistics of this accepted bid be made available to the general public?

Considering it's currently once every couple of years with the winner going to the World Cup, possibly the CFC should budget $5,000.00 per year. The cost for looking after the expenses of players shouldn't fall to the organizers.
Here's from the CFC handbook:
"i) the Canadian Champion and Runner-Up shall have their entry fee, accommodation and meal expenses paid by the tournament organizers;
ii) free entry shall be given to IM’s and GM’s;
iii) free accommodation should be provided for GM’s; "
The governors, in their wisdom, have set rules where the organizer of the Canadian Zonal almost has to adopt some of the entrants and then few, if any, want to bid on holding the event.
The CFC coming up with money for the event or making the rules more palatable for the organizers is certainly something to consider.

It has been two weeks. When will the Canadian Closed be revealed?
