General Guidelines
---- Nous avons besoin d'un traduction français!
Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
It has been two weeks. When will the Canadian Closed be revealed?
I would expect fairly soon. Hotmail seems to be down for me so I can't post anything about the proposal as I would have to consult my email in order to access it. Hal Bond is the organizer.

I sent out an email to the board as soon as hotmail came back up. We still have to hear from one member of the board to see if it will be unanimously accepted which I suspect it will. I will let Hal Bond post the details of the bid. The tournament will be in Guelph. Dates: July 10 – 16, 2015 There is a tentative players meeting in the evening of July 9th which is a Thursday. It will be an 11 round swiss with the usual game in 90 minutes plus 30 second per move increment time control. Free entry to IMs and GMs. $250 entry fee for all others.

Will the event be viable if no untitled players buy in? Will there be accelerated pairing to keep the stars away from the buy ins, as much as possible?

The event will be viable as the likelihood of no untitled players buying in is very low. With 11 rounds (a reduction from the standard 12 rounds) it will hardly be possible to keep the stars away from the rest. The cutoff will be 2100 (CFC, FQE or FIDE) with 2000 possible for provincial and territorial representatives. I am sure that details of the bid and a tournament announcement will be available in due course.

Wait, no free accommodations for IMs and GMs? Well, if Jean Hebert enters, we can expect he WILL show up, he WILL play without a word of complaint, and then after the event and he is back in Quebec, he will start a nasty thread accusing Hal Bond of organizing a sub-standard championship event centered around the fact that he (Hebert) didn't get free accommodations**. He'll say it would have been better to not have had the event at all.
Well, at least make sure there are signs on the top boards showing player names. And don't forget demo boards... and someone to keep them up to the minute.
**Yes, I know, in 2009 Hebert's main beef was no free entry to IMs and GMs. This time around (if he enters) it will be no free accommodations.
Only the rushing is heard...
Onward flies the bird.
According to the CFC Handbook, the organizer must :
1) Provide free accomodation + meals for the champion and the runner-up (GMs Sambuev and Kovalyov)
2) Provide free accomodation for all other GMs (most likely only GM Hansen)
In addition to that, the GMs will probably ask for an appearance fee as in the past years.
One of the most common complaints in 2012 was that there was one day with two games (9 rounds over 8 days). I feel like the 11 games in 7 days might receive mixed feelings (it has the good side of only requiring to miss one week of work).
The player's meeting before the tournament is a great idea. In 2012 a free meal was provided between the two rounds of the busiest day (as people do not have much time between two rounds), and people seemed to enjoy it very much, but having one before the tournament might be better.
The lower rating requirement should bring extra revenues for the organizer, which is a good thing. Since the tournament has 11 rounds, these extra players should not affect too much the outcome. And I am sure quite a lot of them will be ready to pay the entry fee, which is slightly lower than the previous years, as there is now 11 rounds for it.
I know no one asked me, but here is how I would structure the Canadian Closed.
14 players round-robin over two weeks with at least one rest day in the middle.
Players accepted solely by rating with no special allowance for champions of Yukon, Nunavut, Vancouver Island
top Junior from Windsor etc etc.
Entry fee of $1,000 with no free entry for anyone! Each entrant invited to seek their own sponsorship for entry fee & travel - they need to find out how difficult it is. The $14,000 from entry fees to constitute the prize fund. - Prizes: $8,000, $4,000, $2,000
The CFC or any general sponsor to pay for accommodation & meals.
The organizers pay for TD and other staffing costs, venue rental, equipment and all else.

The financials of that proposal would be quite challenging to the players, organizers and the CFC.
The real prize seems to be a spot in the World Cup. While I think Vlad Dobrich has a good idea I'd do it a bit differently but a round robin would be involved. Still, Mr. Dobrich knows how to run successful events.
