General Guidelines
---- Nous avons besoin d'un traduction français!
Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.

14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.

I tried to send a note to Susan Polgar to complain that a X-table of the tournament is not available nor an advance pairings list - except once the round begins.
My computer messaged me that I could not send email because of some block to outlook.
Next got a message supposedly from Microsoft Windows 7 offering to remove problems.
OK, looks like a free cleanup service so spent about 15 minutes watching the progress bar at work.
Pressed the 'continue' button.
Received a menu of options:
One time cleanup ..........$20
Unlimited cleanup ..........$80
OK, spent so much time already, so sent my credit card info to pay $20
Received a message on screen to activate program by calling 1-888 number.
Put on hold ...................
Gave up waiting.
Checked my email to see the charge had been taken from my Master Card.
Sent email back: DO NOT activate the service and REIMBURSE my card charge.
Also to please deleted my card info from data bank.
Here's hoping!
Please take Kerry's advice and cancel your credit card now. There is probably a number on the back of the card that you can call 24 hours a day. Your credit card is being sold to others. Never ever sign up for such services which purport to be from Microsoft. They are not. If you want a free online scan Trend Micro offers one that is not bad.
Finally scan with whatever commercial antivirus software you are using. Your computer will be largely free of viruses and spyware until you visit your next random chess or poker website. Opt to remove all questionable items that these software products identify.

From Wikipedia - Illia Igorevich Nyzhnyk born September 27, 1996) is a Ukrainian chess Grandmaster.
He was born in Vinnytsia (Ukraine) and gained worldwide attention when he won Group B of the 2007 Moscow Open at the age of 10. He attained a nearly flawless score of 8½/9 and his performance rating was 2633, that of a Grandmaster. As of January 2009, his FIDE rating was 2504, the highest rating in the world in the under-12 age group. In 2007 he won the European Youth Chess Championship for under-12. In the 2007 World Youth Chess Championship he tied for first in the under-12 age group, placing second on tie-breaks.
In April 2008, Nyzhnyk won the Nabokov Memorial in Kiev, Ukraine, with 8½/11, and scored his first GM norm. In September 2008 he won, at the age of 12, the European Youth Chess Championship for under 16. Soon after, in December 2008, he placed 12th in the Ukrainian championship, with a performance rating of 2594, barely under the 2600 performance required for another GM norm. In December 2009 he won the Schaakfestival Groningen tournament in the Netherlands with a performance rating of 2741.
His progress since has slowed, perhaps in part due to a lack of funding for chess players in Ukraine, but other notable results include finishing second in the C Group of the Tata Steel tournament in 2011 and then going on to tie for first place at the Reykjavik Open.
I met Illia at the World Open this year as he was rooming with a friend of mine and he seemed like a nice, well-adjusted player who doesn't seem as intense as his chess career will have you believe. I even asked him about a slav game he played against Richard in one of the earlier rounds (I tried out the same line they played in one of the later rounds) and he was kind enough to say a few words about the differences between mine and his game. It's too bad he was able to beat Razvan this past round but I think a GM norm is still possible with a draw in the last round.
