Thanks Peter (especially for NOT posting a picture...) the implied visual is bad enough. I haven't gone to an NFL game but I did go to a Flyers-Bruins NHL game at the Spectrum in Philly... *that* was quite the mob scene for anything: washrooms, beer, food, anything at all. It was one of the most exciting hockey games I have ever been to (I only wish my parents could have afforded tickets to the Leafs games in the 50s and 60s (before their current Stanley Cup drought) - that would have been amazing I am sure.

I remember taking my wife to Leaf hockey games in the 60s. Never playoff games, though. Couldn't get tickets but if I'd known in 67 it would likely be the last time I'd ever see them win the cup, I'd have paid the price.

For fun at Maple Leaf Gardens it would be hard to beat the professional wrestling. They sure put on a show. Mostly when I tell people I liked going they tell me it was phoney. That's OK because I went for the entertainment and not to see people get injured.

I definitely learned quite a bit from this game.

Today Eric has white against Ivan Saric, who defeated Magnus Carlsen at the Tromso Olympiad 2014. Go Eric!

Re: Re : Re: Eric Hansen at Qatar tournament

Eric had a nice hold today, defending an inferior position and with a significant time disadvantage (:

Contingent seed (#69 vs Eric's #68) Nils Grandelius also had a nice hold on board 2 vs Evgeny Tomashensky. With Anish Giri winning easily on board 1, the top seed is now clear 1st with the only perfect 4/4 score.

#9 seed Arkadij Naiditsch and #29 seed Viktor Bologan can certainly commiserate together. Naiditsch lost for the 3rd time today, this time to the #110 seed, 17-year-old IM Shardul Gagare from India. Bologan, who had lost his first 3 games, managed a draw today against the #129 seed, 13-year-old FM M. Amin Tabatabael from Iran. Both Naiditsch and Bologan are bleeding FIDE points rather profusely in Qatar ):

Eric's in a spot of early trouble but hopefully can at least hold again. His opponent, 23-year-old Ivan Salgado Lopez, Spain's #2 rated player at 2622, has played his first 15 moves in negative 3 minutes and 41 seconds and has the better position on the board ):

Irina Krush, who was in a 3-way tie for the $5,000 top female prize with 2 Georgian women, Bela Khotenashvili (who has beaten both Jobava and Sargissian) and Nino Batsiashvili, all with 2.5/4 (the same score as Canada's Eric Hansen), managed to forfeit her game today against Dariusz Swiercz. There's no zero tolerance rule in effect (see regulation below) so I surmise she was more than 15 minutes late ):

2.3. Zero Tolerance Rule doesn’t apply. There is 15 minutes delay for the start of the round.

The #136 seed, 14-year-old WGM Zhansaya Abdumalik (2332) from Kazakhstan is having a very nice tournament. She beat Indian GM R. Rajpara Ankit today to reach 3/5. Given she now has the same score as Eric Hansen (who held his game with relative ease), I suppose she's even a possible (albeit unlikely) opponent for Eric tomorrow.

Giri is now a perfect 5/5 after crushing Mamedyarov in just 21 moves with Black. This follows yesterday's 18-move obliteration of Oleksienko. Sopiko must be exceedingly proud of her "favourite chess player" right about now (:

Nils Grandelius, Sweden's #2 at the start of the Qatar Open, but now clearly their #1 on a live basis, stays within a 1/2 point of Giri with a nice win against Pavel Eljanov. Giri should have White tomorrow against Grandelius in a battle of clear 1st (5/5) vs clear 2nd (4.5/5).

I saw a report somewhere(?) that Irina Krush may have forfeited her game in Round 5 against Dariusz Swiercz
                            ( the crosstable at http://chess-results.com/tnr153113.a...flag=30&wi=821
                            simply shows the result as "- - +" )

Anyone know the backstory? Was it late for the game (zero tolerance) or something else...
Irina is paired for Round 6, so I presume it was not the case that she has bailed out of the tournament.

In round 6, Eric lost to Yuriy Kuzubov and Giri won (again) against Grandelius to go 6-0. Giri will meet Kramnik in Round 7.

I saw somewhere (can't remember where) that she had to bail out of the round as a result of being unwell.
