This will clearly be the litmus test for Giri. In 7 previous classical encounters, it's been all Kramnik, 5 wins and 2 draws.

They've apparently been around for 17 years. Canada is not on their list of "restricted countries" (as are the U.S. and Israel).

Make that 6 wins and 2 draws, a whopping 87.5%. Kramnik truly is kryptonite to Giri.

I must say Yangyi Yu at 6 to 1 odds tempts me greatly. If I knew Giri would play a Queen's Gambit, I'd be more than tempted. Yangyi is deadly against the Queen's Gambit, plus 10, minus 1 (way back in 2009), with 11 draws at chessgames.com. He's drawn his only lifetime encounter with Giri at chessgames.com.

I clearly should have channelled a little Oscar Wilde, namely, "The only way to get rid of temptation is to yield to it ... I can resist everything but temptation" (:

Still, I'm a bit dumbfounded that Giri actually played a Queens Gambit. Yu is now plus 11 and equal 11 in his last 22 games against the Queen Gambit. I don't think Vlad will make the same mistake should he get the White pieces against Yangyi tomorrow. Both Vlad and Yangyi are seemingly 'due' White since they both won with Black today. If chessgames.com is correct, this will be their very first game against one another. It should be interesting to see how Marathon Bet ultimately handicaps the game. I'll post those odds when they become available.

Somehow I doubt we'll ever see these kind of odds on Yu Yanghi again. Hopefully, this win at the Qatar Open (unless Kramnik manages a swindle) will garner him invitations to some elite tournaments (:

Li, Ding (game still in progress), and Yu now have nearly identical ratings, numbers 23, 24, and 25 on the live ratings list.
