Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.

14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.

The Archangel 8 Chess Academy, an official affiliate of the World Chess Federation (FIDE) and US Chess Federation presents the First Annual 2015 Friendship Cup featuring Buffalo native, World Chess Federation and USCF International Master, Kenneth W. Regan, Ph.D., on Saturday, January 17 and Sunday, January 18, 2014 at the Old First Ward Community Center, 62 Republic in Buffalo NY. The two day, Peace Bridge International Winter Chess Festival is held to promote, grow more competitive chess matches with USA and Canadian Chess Federation rated players.
Registrations are being accepted for three sections; FIDE OPEN, U1700 and USCF Rated Beginners Open Scholastic K-12 with reply to Knightsof64@yahoo.com by Wednesday, January 14, 2015. All players are to report by 9am, Games start at 10am. USCF membership is required for all sections.
The 2015 Friendship Cup format includes a two day and one day schedule of games. The Two day schedule includes Five - World Chess Federation (FIDE) and USCF Dual rated games, Duration of games will be Game 120 with 5 second delay.
The One Day schedule - Four dual USCF rated sanctioned games with duration of Game 60 and the Finals are Game 90.
New Section will include a Beginners Rated Open Scholastic K-12. USCF membership required, USCF rated games are Game 35 with 5 second delay and no elimination. Scholastic trophies awarded to the Top three winners and Top Female in sections K-4, – K - 8th and K– 12 Graders donated by Buffalo Teacher’s Federation, Inc.
Past international tournaments have attracted some of the nations best USCF rated National Masters, Candidate Masters, Female Masters and International Masters from Toronto Canada, Ithaca, Cornell, Binghamton, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, and Erie PA.
The 2015 Friendship Cup is proudly support by Old First Ward Community Center, Buffalo Teacher’s Federation, Inc., Buffalo and Erie County Public Libraries and Garnell W. Whitfield, Jr. Buffalo Fire Commissioner.
I am thinking of heading up Friday, for this Saturday's tournament...any hotel recommendations in that area of Buffalo?

I will be travelling with my 9 year old son without my wife...are they strict at the border requesting Consent Letter for Children Travelling Abroad?

I have went there a couple of times with my son, 11 ( without my wife ) and there is no problem at all. Just print out the tournament flyer and tell the officer at the immigration that both of you are playing in a chess tournament for a day. It should be all right.

Now I'm in the process of getting a renewed passport in case I want to go to a USA tournament (I am a member of the USCF and have a USCF rating). I guess there is some justification for the increased security between "good friends".

My youngest is now 23 so it has been a while since I had that issue to deal with; I used to get my wife to sign a letter anyway
and I brought it with me on those occasions BUT I never used the letter...
In my experience with CBSA, it isn't wise to open with paperwork of any kind unless asked for it. :)

I used to go to Detroit with my good friend, Phil Haley, who was in Sarnia at the time. I was in early university then and had no car. So he used to always drive us down. It was so close, we could just commute the two days. It was Phil who, at the time, talked me into buying a CFC Life Membership (I had just started playing tournament chess).....best business decision I ever made in my life!
A Winter Chess Festival and a World Chess Federation (FIDE) a special international Chess event to help promote and establish friendships with Canadian chess players along with an exchange of cultural cross skills.
The first annual International Friendship Cup Chess tournament is hosted by The Buffalo Teachers Federation, Inc. and The Archangel 8 Chess Academy, an official affilate of the United States Chess Federation, celebrating over 16 years of Enrichment Youth Chess programs in the Buffalo - Niagara Falls and WNY area.

It`s about 3 weeks from now. Please write to Mc Duffie for pre-registration. Payment can be made when you arrive on the day ( Saturday ). The venue is big and can accommodate 200 players. As mentioned by Mc Duffie, this tournament is to promote and establish friendship with Canadian players. So why not take this opportunity.....Prize fund is quite generous.....
2 weeks to go before the first tournament near GTA. There is one at Ottawa ( Jan 16-18 ).
A couple of Canadians has registered according to the TD. Hopefully, there will be about at least 20 players from Canada. A Fide rated in the Open section and good prize funds for both sections.
A couple more days to go. A couple of NMs and an IM are playing there. A couple of young Canadian Juniors are playing there as well and one of them played in the recently concluded U-16 Olympiad.
