The 2009 Alberta Closed/Reserves/Women's Championship are under way in Calgary. The Alberta Closed features the top six players in Alberta playing for a spot in the Canadian Closed. Players are:

    IM Edward Porper
    FM Eric Hansen
    FM Greg Huber
    FM Vladimir Pechenkin
    Jeff Reeve
    Rob Gardner

All games were decisive in the first round:

Live coverage via DGT boards can be found in the link provided below. We are having some technical issues which I hope to resolve shortly. For now there is only one board available online.

Good job with choosing which game to broadcast in round 2! The Reeve-Hansen upset.

        Keep 'em coming!

Round 3 will begin at 6 p.m. (Mountain time). It will be between the 2 tournament leaders, IM Edward Porper vs FM Vladimir Pechenkin (ok technically he's not an FM, just need to do the paperwork)

Porper vs Hansen is almost at the first time control. Hansen has the edge being a pawn up in a single rook endgame. Watch the exciting finish

Re: 2009 Alberta Closed Live Broadcast

What happens if there's a tie for first? Will the players split the money and the trip to the possible Canadian Closed, or is there a head-to-head tiebreak?

In the event of a tie, the prize money would be combined and split down the middle. We would then arrange a match at a later date for all players who tie. It is possible that we could see a three way tie for first at this point. So far there has not been a single draw!

Wow, it is rare to see a tournament without at least a draw!

Yes it is. That is because I threatened all the players before the start of the tournament that any draws would result in a severe beating. So, you either beat your opponent severely at the board, or you both get severely beaten by the TD :)

I'm not sure how to explain the lack of draws. I will leave it as all the players demonstrating their fighting spirit.
