Is it commonplace for people to bet on (top level) chess games in Europe, like they do here on NFL games or the upcoming March Madness basketball tournament?

Eric is 79/10 to beat Shakh today, 23/10 to hold a draw, and 34/25 to not lose (i.e. either win or draw) while Shakh is the 11/20 betting favourite. Once again, there's no betting line on Razvan's game.

While there's seemingly nothing wrong with Eric's position on the board against Shakh's Caro-Kann, the fact that Shakh has played his first 13 moves in negative 3:14 and has a full hour's time advantage can hardly auger well for Eric ):

I would guess Eric would be favoured. After winning last round with the Winawer he can probably walk on water. ;)

Not sure about the Winawer, but it looks like Eric's game was draw and so was Razvan's game a draw versus GM Cornette ...

I watched Eric's game for awhile and didn't see more than a draw near the end.

The last game to finish featured an endgame with White having two pawns (g,h) and a rook and Black with one pawn (h) and knight and rook. The question was that if they trade rooks, then was the game absolutely won for Black?

L’Ami finally gets the full point and is the sole leader.

L’Ami is in an endgame with queen, rook and d and h pawns against queen, rook and g pawn. He has the advantage but the chess machine is grinding slowly. Around the 60th move both players are in time trouble. If Erwin wins this game, he has won the tournament outright with one round to go. He tries 62. h4, which everyone has been touting as the winning move. Don’t play over this endgame without having medical help at hand! Eric Hansen and Ian Rogers are in the analysis room and say that it is mate in 60 at move 73, but it is more than likely they have been looking at the computer evaluation.
Finally, L’Ami has the win! We have a tournament winner too. What a game!

                            - brilliant finish by L’Ami, may be his best tournament win

                            - 8.5/9, incredible

                            - must have got a lot of ELO points - 30

Two notes: David Miller is playing the early grandmaster slayer, Daniel Bisby. Readers of The Three Musketeers will remember the infamous Milady de Winter. Michael Murray tomorrow plays against Eric de Winter!

Despite being eleventh in the rating list of the tournament, Dutch grandmaster Erwin L’Ami took the clear first place. He won yesterday with one round to go. Today’s loss to Eljanov didn’t change anything except give the Ukrainian GM second place ahead of French GM Fabien Libiszewski.

                              Some tweets:

L’Ami - A bit annoyed with today's game, but all in all I had a pretty good time in Reykjavik

Eljanov - I didn't show my best chess during this tnmt but 2nd is very decent result. It's interesting that I didn't meet neither Shahriyar nor David.

Congratulations to Eric on a good tournament. Particularly impressive were his two draws against Shak and Eljanov (well over 2700)
