General Guidelines
---- Nous avons besoin d'un traduction français!
Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
15. Have fun!

Nigel Short: Girls wired differently; not suited to play chess
Re: Nigel Short: Girls wired differently; not suited to play chess
Nigel Short might be a gm but on this subject he is more of an idiot. There are so many possible explanations for the lack of strong woman players besides the possibility that their brains aren't hard-wired to do as well in chess as men. Until you rule out the more likely causes (such as the small amount of woman players being too small of a sample size to compare to male chess players, different gender roles in society, how chess is viewed from each gender's perspective, etc...) such as societal quirks that keep woman from pursuing chess then you don't get to automatically assume the most offensive possibility is true.
Also Nigel seems to forget he was at one point the 2nd best player on Earth and Judit Polgar kicks the tar out of him in their classical record, so that shows at peak performance woman aren't that much lower than men.

His conclusion (about chess) might be wrong but the fact is true.
http://www.bbc.com/news/health-25198063 "Men and women's brains are 'wired differently'" "In the study, women scored well on attention, word and face memory, and social cognition, while men performed better on spatial processing and sensori-motor speed. "
http://www.webmd.com/balance/feature...-brains-differ How Male and Female Brains Differ Consider these recent findings. Researchers, using brain imaging technology that captures blood flow to "working" parts of the brain, analyzed how men and women process language. All subjects listened to a novel. When males listened, only the left hemisphere of their brains was activated. The brains of female subjects, however, showed activity on both the left and right hemispheres.
Judit didn't compete in Womens World Championships? it was her sister Susan in the late 90's.
I'm not sure, but I think the third sister, Sophia, also won the WWCC once? Anyone confirm this, and the year, and over whom (if my disaster memory is right).
Short's remarks may be part of a larger, planned campaign or "war"
It is looking like these "controversial" (i.e., offensive to most but pleasing to some) remarks from Nigel Short are part of a larger "war" campaign against Susan Polgar and her husband. See, for example, for a version sympathetic to Short ...
Those who simply say that Short is "controversial" are being disingenuous. This is nasty stuff and it's getting worse. The remarks about "the inferiority of women" at chess look to be simply an opening salvo, after which comes the suppressing fire, and so on.

Dogs will bark, but the caravan of chess moves on.
Re: Nigel Short: Girls wired differently; not suited to play chess
I know Susan Polgar and like her a great deal. She has been a great promoter of the game of chess and continues to be a real leader in the game. I also count Nigel Short as a very good friend. He is a deliberate provocateur in his chess column at New in Chess believing, no doubt, that there is more than enough dry analysis in the magazine already.
I only wish the two were collaborators in making chess more interesting to a broader public but there is too much water under the bridge already. Pity.
On the "merits" of the issue, all I know is that there are at least three girls under 16 years old at our chess club who can beat me at the game.
Re: Nigel Short: Girls wired differently; not suited to play chess
It is unfortunate that the media seem to be confused between the two older Polgar sisters. Judit was, of course, on her recent retirement the strongest woman player of all time (with Hou Yifan coming up very fast) and has a record against Short of +8 =6 -3 in regular games (plus three wins at Amber) according to Megabase2015. Her older sister Susan was a multiple winner of the WWC and the first woman to earn the GM title; she has +1 =1 against Nigel at Amber.
Re: Nigel Short: Girls wired differently; not suited to play chess
The way Nigel describes it can be off-putting for most people but I think the general idea is somewhat correct. Just look at the top 100 women in the world and top 100 men, the only person who has any hope of reaching the upper limits is Hou Yifan. At the end of the day, you guys have to remember that Nigel just likes to have fun with his life and being provocative is probably very fun for him. Why bother with all this hatred? Everyone has an opinion, whether it be good or bad. If anyone is to blame, blame the newspapers, they're the ones who benefit the most out of all this controversy.

Hi Gord:
SCC is a bit bigger.......I think I count about 8 under 16 y.o., who have all actually beaten me in the last year (and there are 3-4 of the younger ones I'm barely beating now.......not in future)!
Don't understand.....Why aren't they the "hard-wired" ones that Nigel meets all over the place, that are patzers??

Why is there even a separation of boys and girls (and men and women) in chess? Could it all be a political ploy orchestrated by FIDE and regional federations to create an artificial sweetener to attract more women / girls into chess (by not throwing those women / girls in with the wolves, i.e. the men / boys) in order to ramp up the game's sex appeal?
There are no other divisions in chess aside from the national ones of the Olympiad. There isn't a World Oriental Chess Champion, nor a World Homosexual Chess Champion, nor a World Left-Handed Chess Champion.
By the very fact that women / girls are separated from men / boys in chess, THERE IS AN INVITATION TO PEOPLE TO COMPARE THE TWO DIVISIONS. And that comparison may lead to any number of conclusions, some more or less scientific than others. Brains wired differently? Well, if you find that offensive and want to prove otherwise, perhaps you need to provide contrary evidence, such as comparing IQ tests of women / girls versus men / boys. I for one would not be surprised to find that such contrary evidence exists. But then again, I can easily believe that there are cultural influences in many societies that give advantage to men / boys in intellectual pursuits such as science, engineering, mathematics... and even chess.
I'd still like to see people debate whether women / girls are less athletic than men / boys because they don't do as well in football. That seems about as meaningful as this chess debate.
Only the rushing is heard...
Onward flies the bird.
