General Guidelines
---- Nous avons besoin d'un traduction français!
Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
15. Have fun!
(Thanks to Nigel Hanrahan for writing these up!)
Looking to buy used Monroi device and used Chronos Chess Clock
It's been listed (on the MonRoi site) at $359 ever since it was introduced (10-15 years ago?).
That's insane.
At least, their army of keyboard warriors seems to have vanished. Back in the days, they would go after you the minute you say something honest about their lousy products.

Hi Mathieu,
Let's agree to disagree. Ther eare many features that I really like at Monroi. Do you know any product that can give live access to your children/students games in a no-spectators tournament? Plus the choice to have it live on internet.

Don't you need a "PTM hub" to broadcast them live on the Internet? A single MonRoi doesn't have that capability (if I'm not mistaken).
Seems I was wrong about the army of keyboard warriors... :p
ChessTalk is a microcosm of the Internet, so there will always be outrage... :)
In any case, I used to complain about some of the features (or lack of features) of the original Monroi and more specifically about the price. I would have thought the price had dropped by now but apparently not. They are useful devices to replace a paper scorebook that used to be very popular, but the price is prohibitive. "Broadcasting" a tournament (or several boards) of a tournament using Monroi is probably cheaper than DGT boards but the Monroi requires at least one player in each game using the device and as mentioned, the 'hub or server' as well. I know the DGT boards are expensive, but they broadcast the moves without much in the way of help from the players... :)
The problem with MonRoi is that they totally missed the boat. In this day and age, you don't develop a 300$ single use device. That's insane. Anybody who's bought one probably regret it. And the device stores only 50 games... What is that? 1988?
You'd be doing much better developping a 3$ app for the iPhone and/or Android. I'd be willing to pay for an official iphone/android app to record chess games.

Of course a phone app would be much much better, but you cannot use the phone in the tournament hall! The only reason Monroi is allowed is because it is a single function device! There is no (normal) possibility to run Komodo or Fritz or whatever

An iphone/android app could solve that problem. Anyways, it would be pretty obvious if anyone was using his iphone for anything else than recording the moves.

I don't know anything about Iphones or androids but isn't one of the most damning pieces of evidence that they have used to catch cheaters is that they have the current position on their phone?

Mathieu, you surely realize that smartphones are multi-tasking computers that can easily run a chess engine while 'pretending' to be running an application that lets the user enter the moves of a game. There would be chaos if FIDE ever allowed random smartphones into tournaments 'as long as they are only used to record the moves'... yeah, right.
Of course it is possible to write an app that would DO that but it would be impossible to prove that only that scenario is actually in use. I presume the Monroi used proprietary software that Monroi has been able to convince FIDE that it cannot be circumvented (again, in general, I don't see how that can be proven). Nevertheless, FIDE seems to have allowed the use of that one device.
I cannot think of any way to prove a specific device has NOT been hacked to do something it was likely not intended to do - especially stock smart phones. A very specific device with some sort of tamper-proof firmware that was factory certified perhaps but even then I can imagine hacks.
Re: Looking to buy used Monroi device and used Chronos Chess Clock
Just have the app approved by the authorities. When it runs, everthing else is shutted down on the phone.
I know, it would be easy to bypass and all. But that's basically the same as having these official monroi devices. Anyone can hack a monroi so that it gives you moves in a coded way.
