      With a draw or win tomorrow IM Leonid Gerzhoy (white against IM Thomas Krnan) can win the tournament and qualify for the World Cup. Nobody voted for him in the poll.

        If Tomas wins things get more complicated:
        2.1 Nikolay wins -> Nikolay 1st
        2.2 Bd. 2 draw:
        -------2.2.1 Razvan wins -> Tomas 1st
        -------2.2.2 Bd.3 draw -> Tomas 1st
        -------2.2.3 Bator wins -> Bator 1st
        2.3 Eric wins:
        -------2.3.1 Razvan wins -> Eric 1st
        -------2.3.2 Bd. 3 draw -> Tomas 1st
        -------2.3.3 Bator wins -> Eric 1st

        Tomas, Eric and Bator played blacks 5 times, so in case of tiebreaks they are ahead of Leonid, Nikolay and Razvan.
        I'm not sure about the 2.3.2 and how is the first tiebreakers used in a 3 way tie situation.

        Name Pts Res. BL
        Tomas 6½ 1½ 5
        Eric 6½ 1 5
        Leonid 6½ ½ 4

        Please note that these are my estimates and might not be the final standings.

              NO, he drew last round and needed a win.

                      Congratulations Tomas!! Well done.
                      Should also mention Razvan's good showing too - tied for 4th-7th (he defeated Tomas in Rd 6 after getting a draw with Eric Hansen in Rd 5!)

                        I was rooting for Eric but enjoyed many of the games. My take away on Eric's games is that he's playing too "safe". Drawing the last 4 of 5 rounds makes it hard to win events.

                        I felt for some of the players who had bad events and ended up down the standing even though they are decent players. It's supposed to be age and experience over youth and exuberance.

                        The 5 games in a little over 2 days at the start of the event looks to me to simply grind down the older players.

                        Congrats to Tomas.

                          Re: 2015 Canadian Closed

                          Four things I'd note for stories:

                          1. Krnan's win (obviously).
                          Not totally out of the blue: he won the Slovak national championship in 2013, though didn't get to take home the title since (luckily for us) he's FIDE registered as Canadian.

                          2. Eric was the only player who didn't lose a game.*
                          Very good, but not good enough in an event where you need 75% or better to win. Is this a bizarre downside of bulletproofing your game against 2600s?

                          3. Nicholas Vettese
                          untitled but finished a half-point or more ahead of... (get this)... ten FIDE masters!

                          4. Tie Breaks?!
                          Maybe a reason to rethink the tie-break system: I don't think it mattered this year, but a withdrawal from a player who was not in contention for the title might determined the tie-break some other year.

                          Congrats to Tomas.

                          Thanks to Hal and MvK for running the event... and for letting me eat some of their players' pizza and snacks when I was there taking pix... which you can see on the CFC facebook page, or on my Google page:

                          *correction: as Andrew P points out below, Hong Rui Zhu (11th) also did not lose a game (+2 =7 -0)
