    Re: R. I. P. Gary Ruben b.09.23.1942 - d.08.23.2015

I first conversed with Gary on the now relatively dormant Ottawa Chess Club internet message board in the mid-2000's. I very likely saw him much earlier in person, some distance away, in the mid-1980's at the Scarborough Chess Club, as the man I saw would have been about Gary's age & height (well over 6 feet). Whether Gary agreed or disagreed with people on chess message boards about things, he would never stop talking to them. A prolific poster and correspondence chess enthusiast who will be missed. My condolences to the family.

Sorry to hear of Gary's passing.

As a former Scarborough CC member, he and I often chatted here about the club and how it was doing. We also had fun crossing swords on politics, climate change, etc.

I advised him when SCC was holding its 50th anniversary a few years ago, and he said he would like to come. And, as a senior alumni, he did show up, cane in hand, and I met him personally for the first time...he was always supportive of SCC. We chatted for a while, and he was not quite so cheerily combative in person, as he sometimes was here on Chesstalk....quite pleasant to chat with.

And it appears he has a nice legacy in the Canadian Correspondence Chess world.

He will be missed. A significant contributor to the game of chess in Canada, OTB and especially correspondence.

I'm very sorry to hear about this. In many ways Gary was a kind-of touchstone for ChessTalkers. There was no important issue where he didn't weigh in. (And of course on lots of less important ones.) He was refreshingly blunt and a frequent burr under many people's saddles, a role which I think he enjoyed immensely.

            He is already missed.

            RIP Gary.

My condolences to everyone - family, friends, and chesstalkers. He really wrote interesting posts, sharing his opinion on everything, remembering old days. He left huge shoes to fill here at chesstalks.

Probably he would be happy not like me in Aurora:

"Aurora residents miss Canada Post community mailbox cut-off by days"

I saw mine - no sidewalk, a quite dark area, grrr.
