  • Vancouver Championship history?

Perusing the outstanding website bcchesshistory.com, one comes across a veritable wealth of useful information. Stephen Wright is in charge of this site, and is among the handful of outstanding chess archivists in Canada, along with IA David Cohen and Hugh Brodie. :)

I do have one question. Given that Vancouver has been a major chess city for decades, with many strong players, it is curious that there are no listings for historical Vancouver City Champions on this site, nor anywhere else I have checked. Is this part of the 'work in progress' element for the site?

    Thanks and best wishes,

I prepared incomplete lists of champions for both Vancouver and Victoria some years ago, but other priorities have intervened. Maybe this will provide the impetus to look at them again.

The Victoria Cup will be presented to the highest scoring Victoria player in next month's Victoria vs Vancouver Scheveningen match. It is a somewhat unusual way of determining the city championship - no direct encounters between the competitors. The cup has the names of city champions going back quite a few years and lately has been presented annually to the Victoria Chess Club Champion.

I imagine Paul forgot about the "club history" page for the Victoria club which among other things, gives more details on the Victoria cup. (mostly courtesy of Stephen Wright and direct inspection of the trophies involved although the page needs to be updated for the last few years).

I can reliably report that I won the Victoria cup in 1969.

the trophy is in the awards shop having some engraving done (this year's winner, me). When it gets back, I'll check to see if your name is there (and omitted in error from the club webpage)

The last few years, it has been used for the Victoria Chess Club which I have always won. This year, it will be used for the the top scoring Victorian in the Victoria Open (Schveningen section)
