General Guidelines
---- Nous avons besoin d'un traduction français!
Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
15. Have fun!
(Thanks to Nigel Hanrahan for writing these up!)
Vlad Drucklec Censor's My Response's to him On The CFC Discussion Boards My Response
He is still president with no powers at the moment. If this is a stumbling block for the U.S., it will be a pity, as the U.S. has a strong team for the Olympiad as well as several players that might go far in the next world championship cycle.
Yes, I agree that it would be a pity, it is a pity that FIDE put it's organization at risk by remaining involved with Kirsan in any way shape or form.

..Here is a post that Mig Greengard did on chess talk that is much more illuminating then what I can say that clearly shows why Canada would benefit from embracing Garry Kasparov.
Why does all the great things Mig indicates require Kasparov to be FIDE president? He could start initiatives around bringing chess to schools in Canada (I'm sure the very concept shocks Larry Bevand btw). He could do whatever this mystery plan is to bring thousands of members into the system by incorporating online players. Being an essential member of FIDE commissions is relatively pointless in my view. So what's stopping him?

Hi David, none of the things described require Garry to be FIDE president and they are in fact doing all these great things. As you can see Mig invited the CFC to contact him. The distinct competence they have with respect to chess in schools is offering a program that makes it possible to have chess as part of the curriculum and not an optional activity. Re: Vlad Drucklec Censor's My Response's to him On The CFC Discussion Boards My Resp
So, in a sense, Kirsan is in limbo, much as Rob Ford was in the latter part of his City of Toronto mayoralty (2010-2014).
Ford was still Mayor of Toronto in name, but with greatly reduced powers. There was no possible way, using existing legislation, of formally getting rid of Ford, so Toronto City Council chose this option, which worked out well. Another Councillor, Norm Kelly, stepped in as de-facto Mayor, after election by Council to this role, assuming most of the mayor's powers, to finish the term.

Fair point, and if this is the case (material assistance with this is available with no strings attached), the CFC is very foolish for not doing so.

I have tried giving up sleep but it doesn't seem to work so well. We have somewhat limited human resources to work with. The chess in the schools program is of interest. I have had discussions with people about this going back to my first months as CFC president. At that time our CFC office was a bit over stressed and it seemed more important to get that dealt with before trying to launch a massive new program. We recently signed a deal with Premium Chess. They have a platform for teaching called Junior Arena which will offer free membership to players aged under 14 years of age which probably conveniently encompasses grade school kids. It is also expected to play an important role in the FIDE chess in the schools program. Once those pieces are in play we will have the beginnings of something to work with. There are a few other things that we are working on that could probably coalesce into something that will contribute to preparing the ground for such a program. I cannot take on any more major tasks at least through the end of the summer until the three tournaments (CYCC, Canadian Open and NAYCC) have been completed and it would probably take the active involvement of a board member to make this work. I expect that with what is happening with these three tournaments I will be in touch with people in government who are interested in helping us in this regard.

I was thinking the same thing Vlad. Working together with the Kasparov Foundation could be very interesting. If only there were more hours in the day, and/or more people (with thick enough skin) willing to jump in.

Say Vlad, have you had the chance to check out the Junior Arena? Like could teachers use it to give their students supplementary training between lessons, etc? Thanks.

My understanding is that there is a whole library of lessons and videos that teachers and federation approved instructors and kids can access.

Re: Vlad Drucklec Censor's My Response's to him On The CFC Discussion Boards My Resp
Does anyone know whether Ilyumzhinov is still receiving his salary for being FIDE President during his suspension? This seems like the kind of information that a Zobal President should have access to. I'd appreciate a complete answer to this question.

I think they have doubled his salary to zero dollars per year.
Re: Vlad Drucklec Censor's My Response's to him On The CFC Discussion Boards My Resp
Thanks to Vlad and Sid for their informative posts.
I take from Vlad's post that Ilyumzhinov does NOT draw a salary from FIDE.
I take from Sid's post that there very well may be a kickback type of scheme involving Andrew Paulson and Ilyumzhinov, around the staging of FIDE tournaments.
Re: Vlad Drucklec Censor's My Response's to him On The CFC Discussion Boards My Resp
The FIDE President does not draw a salary and Andrew Paulson is no longer involved with Agon. I could not open Sid's link but in principle I would rather see the President on a published salary and prohibited from holding a proprietary stake in the WC Cycle. Campomanes was very adept at "milking, not stealing" from FIDE activities, according to a FIDE insider. Kirsan rescued FIDE from insolvency in the early days, and is possibly trying to claw back some of his investment. I really don't know either way. You won't find evidence of it in the audited accounts.
