General Guidelines
---- Nous avons besoin d'un traduction français!
Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
15. Have fun!
(Thanks to Nigel Hanrahan for writing these up!)
US Treasury Department idiocy may well come to an end sooner rather than later
US Treasury Department idiocy may well come to an end sooner rather than later
With the US/Russian agreement on steps to stop the fighting in Syria, the nefarious actions of Treasury to criminalize Kirsan (and anyone else who disagrees with bellicose US policy) may well come to an ignominious end - sooner than predicted as well.
The neo con policy has turned into an abysmal failure and US (and allied regimes) efforts to effect regime change in Syria has crashed and burned. So any policies to that end are going to be moot. Of course, it begs the question whether the Russian authorities may, themselves, had quite enough of Kirsan (an outcome that cannot be imagined by the neo cons, however) and decide on their own not to oppose the Treasury Department's actions.
The most important thing is that Syrians won't be dying and displaced in such horrific numbers. A positive result in that regard will reduce the flow of refugees to Europe, Canada and elsewhere. In fact, since the Russian AF has given the (fill in the blank)-sponsored terrorists the merciless thrashing they deserve, the flow of refugees has measurably declined.
If I'm right, the way that the US and the Treasury Department drops their actions should be quite delicious. Keep your eyes open.

Are you *ever* going to grow up in the way you post your political crud?? How do you expect anybody to take you seriously when you repeatedly "editorialize" via parenthetical snide remarks (let alone the ones in bold)?

GM Kramnik "The Sanctions Imposed on Ilyumzhinov Might Have Been Kasparov's Revenge"
Originally posted by GM Vladimir Kramnik
"This is very sad, - the former World Champion says. - Whatever opinions people might have about Ilyumzhinov, I am sure that exactly those accusations are far-fetched. It looks more like a revenge for the 2014 FIDE elections which Kasparov lost to Ilyumzhinov by a wide margin. Kasparov had a colossal support by the USA during the elections, including the financial side of the matter. Perhaps the people who were backing him have good contacts in the U.S. Department of State. Thus, they decided to combine business with pleasure as they got their revenge for the failed elections and also attempted to hamper conclusion of a major contract..."
"In an interview to a Russian newspaper Sport-Express, Vladimir Kramnik communicates his opinion on the sanctions the U.S. Department of the Treasury imposed on Kirsan Ilyumzhinov."
Notice that Kramnik mentions "the people backing him (Kasparov)" as having "good contacts" in the State Department. Kasparov is well known as a supporter of the odious neo cons. The latter have had an enormous influence on the current, and previous, US administrations.
But, if they have, nevertheless, failed to "hamper conclusion of a major contract", then all the more reason for the US to drop the spurious sanctions against the embattled FIDE President. Prediction: Kirsan will be in NYC in November, or certainly back before the 2018 FIDE elections (i.e., once a new admin takes place in Washington) go ahead. Count on it.
""The bizarre comments by Vladimir Kramnik attempting to blame me for FIDE president Kirsan Ilyumzhinov's corruption are, if little else, definitive proof that exceptional chess skill does not represent broader intelligence or moral character. "
I find myself in complete agreement with Kasparov's conclusion but not for the reason he may think. :)

The SAA is giving the terrorists a thumping. Oh, no!
With the Syrian ceasefire holding, despite the boiling rage of the terrorists and the neo cons, the whole monstrous narrative of blaming the victim of terrorism for terrorism (blaming Syria for Daesh, al-Nusra, etc.) is unraveling.
Couldn't happen to a nicer bunch of guys. When the last ISIS terrorists are driven from Syria by the Syrian Arab Army, the Russian AF, etc., it's going to take some remarkable hubris to keep up the facade of blaming them for "sponsoring" terrorism.
And that means alleging a connection between Kirsan and the terrorists, via a Syrian bank, is looking more and more like Kasparov's revenge. Good on Kramnik for boxing his ears. Sometimes truth has to be spoken to power, and blurted out, and let the chips fall where they may.
What a farce this whole story has become. And it just shows the degree to which even a Democrat like Obama has become a poodle for the neo cons. The latter's script for regime change in Syria has left them with broken teeth and a stupid look on their faces.

I admire your ability to report on issues like these without resorting to emotionally charged phrases and name calling.
Mind you, to be fair, it's a trait I admire in many who post on Chesstalk.
lol. And I'm not even warmed up.
Seriously, this neo con political trend has got to be the most bellicose, aggressive ideology going. In many ways they have plenty in common with the Sunni jihadists. It's just endless war as fun and game$: Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, Yemen, Syria. The latest chatter has the representatives of the Saudi regime visiting Washington to discuss the destabilization of Lebanon.
I wouldn't bother to mention them at all but they seem to be over-represented in the chess fraternity. And I think they do harm to our sport.
Anyway, I've made a prediction or two. Let's see if I eat my words or hit the nail on the head. Cheers.
