General Guidelines
---- Nous avons besoin d'un traduction français!
Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
Any idea what the salvation of the federal NDP might be? Is it the LEAP MANIFESTO?
P.S.: Today Ottawa is the coldest capital city in the world, ahead of Moscow (which is at 5 degrees). Anyone who believes in Global warming should stand outside for 10 minutes. :p

Ulaanbaatar (seems to be the current way of spelling it), Mongolia was -9 last night; +3 at noon (EDT). It's usually a good competitor with Ottawa for the tile of the world's coldest capital.

Hi Kevin: From an armchair quarterback (I did all my canvassing, scrutineering, knocking on doors, office work, phoning, pulling votes, sitting on a riding association executive committee once, a while ago now)
The centre left in Canada has been co-opted by our friend Justin (I am a bit amazed.....his campaign offered deficits, but the rest was pretty centrist).....he's moved more to the left than in his campaign, IMHO (though for Liberals, it can't last, given who they are in general). For the NDP to try to outflank him from further on the left, with more radical policies, may lead to trouble with Canadian voters.....I'm not sure there is as large a revolutionary base here as the one Sanders is tapping into in the USA.
If I am right on that, then the plan is to let Justin self-destruct,,,,,,,,and highlight it! Especially policy waffling, breaking campaign promises, decisions to the right...there will become a credibility problem for the Liberals, and they have to keep it all up for four more years.......and generally the NDP rates very high in polls re trust factor, being honest, doing what they say, etc.
They will become the "better" left of centre option. The last election of Justin, over Thomas, will have been seen to be a mistake.
OK everyone.......I've stuck my chin out.......take a swing at it!

How many snow days did you have in Ottawa during the winter? Toronto had several, other days ground was without a snow. I can not complain much about one day of snow in April.

Hi Bob
Justin Trudeau won a majority mostly because he is young and has a pretty face. People fall for that almost every time in an election. Besides that, he has some brains in that he rebuilt the party, though not enough smarts to realize what the costs of some of his left-wing policies like legalizing pot will be.
IMHO, if the NDP hope to compete next election and don't care what the cost is to the country, they should dump Angry Tom for a prettier face, and adopt the leftist manifesto to outflank the Liberals on the left. Canadians mostly love socialism, though public health care is one of the few good things to ever come from it.
When I predicted The Donald would be US President, I didn't imagine he'd alienate so many voters so unnecessarily. My fault for not following his career more closely. Now I don't think he has a chance, but if he does become President then the threat of the last days arriving willl surely be immediate. I now think Hillary may need to bow out due to scandal or health reasons, and Bernie will become Prez almost by default.

lol. The weather is not the climate. That's worth looking up.
If you want an example of greenhouse effect run rampant, have a look at Venus. Boiling oceans, yellow skies, a choking carbon dioxide atmosphere, and a surface temperature that would melt lead.
I guess if you're really sick of the cold, then that might seem to be an improvement. But not for long.

I'd settle for being in Florida, if it's fairly warm right now. Meanwhile, lots and lots of beautiful snowflakes to look at today outside of my window and down on the street.

I like the idea of free public dental care at least, if it really could be afforded by the country. Esecially after losing a number a teeth in recent times, possibly unnecessarily due to the high cost of specialist care.

Fwiw, yesterday's snowfall (15 cm) was a record for Ottawa for April 6. More snow on the way tomorrow.

I'm not quite sure what to make of all the angst among the NDP ranks re: the discussion & passage of the radical environmentalist/socialist/communist Leap Maifesto to be now discussed as future party policy. Surely any jobs lost due to the shutdown of the oilsands & the forbiddence building future pipelines will be more than made up for by other jobs created in the brave new worker's paradise.
