General Guidelines
---- Nous avons besoin d'un traduction français!
Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
Re: Kitchener Waterloo Team Active Saturday June 25
Hi Tony,
What are the rules of the team tournament?
1. Is there any requirement that the board must follow the strength of the players (CFC or Fide) i.e. Board 1 must be played by the strongest player and so on?
2. What if Board 1 and 3 wins and Board 2 and 4 lose, is it considered as a tie 2-2 ?
What are the prizes (cash or trophies)? Just curious!

Re: Kitchener Waterloo Team Active Saturday June 25
Congratulations to the Future of Canadian Chess (Adam Cormier, Richard Chen, Eugene Hua, Nicholas Vetesse) who finished 1st with 4.5 match points and 17.5 out of 20 game points!
Tied for first but second on tiebreak is ROCA Backward Pawns (GM Gergely Szabo, IM Razvan Preotu, Gordon Gooding, Rene Preotu) finishing with with 4.5 match points and 14 out of 20 game points.
Outright third place went to my Vitamins team (myself, William Klarner, Ralph Deline, Anton van Niekerk) with 3.5 match points.
Re: Kitchener Waterloo Team Active Saturday June 25
Now I think I've seen everything a tournament that takes in almost $500 dollars (12 teams x 40 = $480) and decides not to have any sort of prize fund. I'm pretty sure nearly if not all previous years had a prize fund with such a large turnout for this one this came as a dramatic shock.
I'm sure everyone who attended especially the winners would love to see a funds vs costs breakdown. From my knowledge the equipment + location are both free and I don't think the trophies make up the difference (considering mine broke within hours and not due to my frustration).
Despite this it was still a fun tournament and I got to play good chess and get another lesson from a GM, just have a prize fund next time or say in advance you won't.

The tournament was well attended ( more than 12 teams ) and thanks to Brian Clark, the tournament was well organized. The only negative was the prize was only 4 trophies and no prize $$$ despite collecting more than $ 500. The payout was only 20% ( or less than that ) of the total money collected which will count the lowest payout tournament despite having the tournament hall free of charge. Why only this year no prize $$$ where the other year had and this year was well attended ?
Re: Kitchener Waterloo Team Active Saturday June 25
Congratulation to the winners! Looks like they drew the match against RoCa (likely, lost on first 2 boards and won on the last 2) and collected 15.5/16 in 4 other matches - a great performance. While the average rating of 2 strongest teams was really close, usually team with stronger "tail" gets an advantage.
Mark and me were playing twice in this tournament. We won in 2012 with M.Ivanov (he won the critical game against M.Barron in 2Q against 1Q ending) and Z.Dukic. We got something like 200 CAD (50 CAD each). Sure, many players were ready to play for free in the team tournament. However, financial conditions (especially in case of deteriorating) should be announced well in advance.
Re: Kitchener Waterloo Team Active Saturday June 25
Adam, Gary, Victor,
Off of memory, in the past the prizes were 160-200 dollars, which seemed very reasonable.
I was surprised there was no prize and will ask for a reason from the club executive on Tuesday. It is possible the club rented the equipment this time, or purchased new equipment recently (clocks definitely looked new).
I saw some cost breakdowns in the past where the equipment depreciation was clearly too low, so it might also be a case of poor costing in the past inflating expectations.

Tony,
Thanks for your reply. As much as I appreciated your reply, I think that is not a right way to punish this year's winner because of the organizer's wish to recover more cost this time or something to that effect. This will not sound right for next year's participants to join. This will not help in promoting team tournament next year indeed and I can understand Adam's frustration or other winner's as well. You don't give prizes one year and not in another year.....There must always be a consistency as an organizer. Just my view though....
Re: Kitchener Waterloo Team Active Saturday June 25
This caught me by surprise when discussing with Brian after the last round and I dont think its right (lack of a prize fund) I'll definitely look into it.
