General Guidelines
---- Nous avons besoin d'un traduction français!
Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
Re: Kitchener Waterloo Team Active Saturday June 25
Yes congratulaions to the Future of Canadian Chess (they well might be). Two kids, one teenager, and another who might still be a teenager (young adult). Its hard to overlook a 12 year old master on board 4.
Thanks for your reply. As much as I appreciated your reply, I think that is not a right way to punish this year's winner because of the organizer's wish to recover more cost this time or something to that effect. This will not sound right for next year's participants to join. This will not help in promoting team tournament next year indeed and I can understand Adam's frustration or other winner's as well. You don't give prizes one year and not in another year.....There must always be a consistency as an organizer. Just my view though....
Several people have griped about the lack of a prize fund, and rightly so. I have read and seen the error of my ways.
While I did direct the tournament, I did not organize it, and therefore was somewhat removed from the planning. When I saw that trophies were to be awarded, I somewhat automatically concluded that they were to be the prizes instead cash. This, in combination with the low entry fee, my bad memory about previous payouts and my intent to capture some of the entry fees to cover the cost of clocks and sets is what led me astray.
Note the following things:
People do tend to greatly underestimate the costs of running tournaments. For instance, the cost of providing equipment (clocks and sets) is often overlooked. These costs are partially recovered by allocating some of the entry fees towards them. It takes several years for these costs to be recovered by chess clubs this way. By the time that these costs are recovered it's time to buy replacements so the process continues indefinitely.
In addition the entry fees were a bit lower than what people have stated here since some of the players were actually floaters who filled in as required to avoid giving people byes. Floaters do not pay entry fees.
The prizes to be awarded were not included in the advertising for this tournament. So, although technically we were in not required to provide cash prizes, precedent and expectations dictated otherwise. Victor is correct in stating that we should clearly advertise changes in prizes to be awarded. Expectations should match reality.
Therefore, I have decided to match previous tournament payouts. So each person on the winning team, consisting of Adam Cormier, Richard Chen, Eugene Hua, Nicholas Vetesse will be awarded $50 each. This leaves little to the club for equipment cost recovery but so be it. I will send checks to each person once I get mailing addresses. Those of you going to the CYCC or Canadian Open can collect it as cash from me.

I was going to discuss with you tomorrow... normally the tiebreak only determines the trophy and title, not the prizes...
Hopefully whoever saw the previous post will appreciate that the prizes would be $25 each...
You are right. I made a technical mistake this time. There were two teams that tied. So eight people get $25 each. That includes the four already mentioned (The Future of Canadian Chess) plus ROCA Backward Pawns (GM Gergely Szabo, IM Razvan Preotu, Gordon Gooding, Rene Preotu).
