General Guidelines
---- Nous avons besoin d'un traduction français!
Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
Please use this thread to post any discussion you may have concerning the CFC elections.
Note: As the elections are held on the CFC Forum some candidates may choose to make comments or answer questions there. But feel free to copy posts from there into this thread.
Can we not have a least draft fiscals posted for potential candidates to view.
Fred in 2013 the fiscals were compiled on May 1st, and accountants later contracted had not one adjusting entry.
Now we are back to waiting months and months.
Fred that is quite a significant disconnection of what was instant valid reporting and what now is.
Why not create a [CFC Director's?] position of "CFC Membership Co-ordinator"?
Some suggestions for what such a person might oversee:
1) Make what in business are called "cold calls", i.e. to households that haven't had any CFC members yet (note: would need to avoid those on "do not call" list);
2) Similarly, execute a (small?) snail mail campaign, especially with the equivalent of "cold calls", i.e. to households as described in suggestion #1;
3) (optional) Can in some way mention bughouse in executing suggestions #1 & #2. Be responsible to post bughouse tournament notices on the CFC Discussion Board tournament announcements forum, too.
P.S.: Other suggestions, which might be performed seperately by a "CFC Clubs Admistrator", would include:
4) Contacting clubs across Canada, in order for the CFC to update club contact email, & other club info, for the CFC website;
5) Passing CFC-related information to clubs that they may not be aware of, such as [new] CFC programs;
6) Finding more clubs that exist in Canada, i.e. which are not yet listed on the CFC website.

I forgot to mention that it might be a good idea to have a [non-Executive] CFC officer position for someone who volunteers to manage the CFC website. Giving that person a voice and a vote at CFC meetings might be some slight incentive for a voluteer to step forward.
Btw, I've edited my previous post a bit.

I'll also bring forward the idea of a Web Officer.

I like 4, 5, and 6 but for some reason 1, 2, and 3 made me think of a door-to-door bughouse salesperson. :)

I believe John Brown, as an ordinary CFC member, volunteered some time ago for a while, to take on a position (Clubs Coordinator?) that dealt with 4 - 6. I think it was his initiative to get CFC to do it too.
Before going much further on 4-6, I think John should be contacted, or weigh in on this topic.

Hi Bob
I believe John was a volunteer titled 'Clubs Coordinator', as opposed to 'Clubs Administrator', a number of years ago, when both positions existed, but 'Clubs Coordinator' was dedicated just to point #6. Perhaps point #6 is a multi-year undertaking, to complete, though.

We elected a clubs co-ordinator at the BCCF AGM, Alfred Pechisker.
Same rationale, the information on clubs on our website was gradually deteriorating and there was little contact between some of the clubs and the BCCF.
Hi Bob I contacted 143 Cites through City halls and I had 47 responses. Some people even said they contacted the CFC and the CFC said they never heard of me or the program. I did not continue after Michael left as the new CFC president did not contact me to continue.
So if you want something done then do it yourself. I worked on it but you need cooperation from all sides.
CFC is not interested in doing anything to increase membership. They just want current members to bleed so they can pay the PUGI Funds that cannot be touched. I got no support from CFC on this venture. Kevin put me down from the beginning so if he has all these GREAT IDEAS then let him do the foot work. Blame those who volunteer and the volunteers will say Fu* k You.
John, all I recall from those days is there no reports from you for many months. I noted that at indivual meetings, if that's 'putting you down'. After discussion came up about getting another volunteer, you sent Michael an email to the effect that you were pursing the work.
There's no achive entries for meetings that go that far back on the CFC discussion board, as far as I know, so unfortunately I can't verify my memory of this. My apologies if my reports at meetings sounded at all impatient.

I'm amazed how many ideas surface before the AGM, and how fast they die (till the next year) over and over again.
Long time ago the most active chesstalker, Gary Ruben, wrote - you pay or do yourself. As I'm paying, I would like to be not robbed halve of the magazine issues. Thus, would be good to hear a plan how that will be addressed by former/future execs.

Hi Kevin;
I was not allowed to join the Governors discussion board and I do remember that I had computer problems and had to go to library to get information.I reported to Michael and what ever I did I passed on to him. If it was not quick enough for you then you should have contacted me directly instead of complaining on a discussion board that I had no access to.
Anyway this case is closed. Unless the CFC can contact the City Towns halls themselves the Town Hall committees will not report to me.
So I abandoned the idea.
The time to do this stuff is over so stop bringing it up.
