General Guidelines
---- Nous avons besoin d'un traduction français!
Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.

I don't have a problem with this. I do have a problem with the CFC executives because they didn't ask the selection committee to explain their "short-sightedness" before announcing the team.
The CFC executives (and the majority of the Canadian chess community) knew that the selection committee decision wasn't the correct one but they swallowed it so they don't upset the FQE.[/QUOTE]
Rene. I can tell you for a fact that the CFC Executive had no discussion among themselves concerning the choices of the selection committee.
If you think this is a serious problem (the actions of the CFC Executive), then it's a good thing that the AGM and elections are just around the corner.

In social psychology this is called pluralistic ignorance. Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tale "The Emperor's New Clothes" is an example.
We made a decision not to lose money at the Canadian Open this year. We didn't lose money. Once all the bills are in I believe we broke even by assigning a large chunk of the funds raised not specifically assigned to CYCC or NAYCC to the Canadian Open. If we had lost money the loss would have been shared by the Windsor organizing committee which includes the parents and coaches in Windsor. Because of a large number of last minute entries we probably could have paid for a few more GMs but that was not clear even a week before the start of the tournament.
If we had two years to raise money and hadn't had to work on two other major tournaments at the same time (on a compressed schedule) then we probably could have done better on number of GMs. I spent two hours on fundraising and that's it and then the fire hose started firing emails at me. As it was we had a modestly sized intimate event in a beautiful venue which most of the players enjoyed aside from some issues with their own performance in some cases. In fact a local player/coach was able to achieve an IM norm and one or two players came very close to doing the same.
I had to say no a lot in order to achieve that result including weighing every option against the financial toll and the toll on volunteers over the three tournaments. I am pretty happy with the way it all turned out given the financial and time constraints that we were working under. No question that some noses are a bit out of joint. There is also no question that I was not able to devote more than about 12 hours a day to my duties as CFC president and chief organizer of these three events so I did have to lighten the load a bit and jettison many non-essential items. There were many helpful suggestions along the way but no one stepped forward with the tens of thousands of dollars those suggestions would have cost so we had to respectfully decline to entertain those ideas.
At the NAYCC some of the parents broke out in applause to the chief arbiter Aris Marghetis today when he stepped into the parents room so it appears that we have managed to at least make most of the participants happy in our three events. In the end, that counts for something.
What I should also make clear is that we didn't turn any GMs away. We accepted several more than showed up but perhaps they got better offers elsewhere and didn't follow through. Two of the GMs who did show up got more than they expected from us and much more than they initally asked for which was exactly nothing in one case and a place to stay in another.
The role of the Executive was to choose a Selection Committee as per the guidelines in the Handbook.
You seem to think that each one secretly wanted to reject their selection, but assumed everyone else was OK with it, so remained silent.
I accepted the Selection off the Committee, and had no desire to attempt to overturn it - I can't speak for anyone else - but I doubt that your opinion is the case.
Seriously speaking, Eric on board 4 gives us more flexibility in certain circumstances. I will be happy to answer any question about board order, line-ups and my other decisions after Olympiad.
The only justification I can imagine is that you consider Lesiege and Krnan to be your weak links, and want to give them as many whites as possible to protect them, including the likely possibility of giving them both white when playing together when one of the top two boards sits out. If so, I retract my earlier harsh criticism of the selection as it makes logical sense. My long held criticisms of selecting Lesiege remain however.
The CFC executives (and the majority of the Canadian chess community) knew that the selection committee decision wasn't the correct one but they swallowed it so they don't upset the FQE.
Care to elaborate on that one? You seem to imply that there was some favoritism or behind the door deals going on?
