Re: Mississauga Open - Saturday Oct 22

    We are at 64 players ( Oct 15, 2016 ).

If your name is not on the list above and you have registered, please send me an email again as I may have missed it.

4 more days to go before early bird dateline ends. We are expecting another 40 players or so to make it 100.

Premier section - It is so disappointing to see that not even a 2300 rated player sign up. This has been a trend for the past 1-2 years and very good players only come out and play in tournaments like Hart House and Guelph thus denying juniors a chance to play against them in smaller tournaments. Remember that you were at that stage before ( below 2300 ) and you should do your part in letting them to have a chance to play against you now.

Re: Mississauga Open - Saturday Oct 22

I am still thinking about whether to play or not in your tournament next week. While I like Mississauga tournaments in general, I would like to provide some thoughts on the format of this tournament with the hope to make it even better –
      1. Happy with location and organizers
      2. Very happy with the intention to start on time
      3. Glad to have one-day tournament rather than two-day tournament
      4. Not happy about time control (one hour/SD). SD makes no sense to me. Anything between 25 and 50 minutes + 10 seconds would make sense to me. I strongly believe in increments (even 2 seconds are better than nothing).
      5. One-hour break between SD rounds does not appeal to me. One-hour break would be appropriate for lunch only (let’s say between Rd2 & Rd3).
      6. The entire day (from registration to prizes) looks like almost 12-hour commitment which is a way too much for average player (if SD, Rounds at 10, 12:15, 3, 5:15 would be better option)
      7. Prize distribution between sections should be disclosed in advance. I noticed that some players are very sensitive to this matter. Some adults in lower sections may not like the idea to disproportionally support GM/IM. Fair or reasonable distribution of prizes between sections can be provided in advance based on, let’s say, 100 players.
      8. I personally don’t mind free rides (no entry fees) for GM/IM
      9. I don’t believe in lecturing about moral obligations for professional players - GM/IM/FM/2300 (e.g., ‘do your part…’) – on which tournaments to play
Whether I play your tournament or not (depending on my other commitments, not money distribution), I wish you best of the luck as Mississauga organizers are doing fantastic job in promoting chess in the GTA area and experimenting with different formats.

Thanks Yury for your support all this few years in attending Mississauga tournaments and your comments.

        9. I don’t believe in lecturing about moral obligations for professional players - GM/IM/FM/2300 (e.g., ‘do your part…’) – on which tournaments to play
        >> It's just happening in most tournaments in GTA for the last 1-2 years. Probably the tournament organizers did not do a good job in having attractive prize money funds ( my guess ) as Hart House and Guelph could attract these players. Well too bad then for the rising juniors in the smaller tournaments

What I can say is that being a chess tournament organizers are not easy in GTA area. ( my view ). Others may not agree....

The other points will be left to Bob Gillanders to ponder ....and to improve for next tournament

        Thanks again Yury

We are approaching 70 players now as of this morning with our first CFC 2300 player registered, NM Geordie Derraugh. He has been actively promoting chess in Toronto on Wednesday at the chess pub and not playing chess actively in tournament proper. Thanks to him we have our first NM rating above 2300.

          http://forum.chesstalk.com/showthrea...)-October-26th

Hope more higher rated players will join the fun and hopefully by end of the day today we will reach 80 players. We have 34 players in U-1200 which currently forms half of the total number of players now.

3 more days to go before Oct 18th, 2016 if you don't want to pay the late fee.

          Cheers

            Gary;
Why do you care how many come? Why are you worrying what others say or think?

You are running a tournament with conditions and you offer a site with prizes.

What more can any chess player need?

No wonder Tournament organizers are stepping out of providing events. There are too many nitpickers out there.

              >> Thanks for your inputs. To answer your questions. Of course, I care. This is the main objectives being an tournament organizer or even as a person in charge of registration. If you have few players attending, what is the point of hosting a tournament ? There are cost involved as well in hosting a tournament

              >> It is not easy to be an organizer what more in Canada where the most organizer are willing to prepare all the chess equipment unlike in USA Someone in the past must have started this tradition. In USA, after every round, all the tables will be clean and clear. Having said that, MCC strives to host a good tournament with a good turnout and a good tournament for all to remember. If I undertake to do something, I will make sure I do the best for the organizers and the players as well

                  Hi Victor,

Thanks so much for your registrations. I will include both of you in. Open section now looks much better with you and Geordie in the list. Richard Chen just registered as well.

And yes. Thanks to you as Captain of the Olympiad team, Canada almost made it to the podium. It was so interesting to follow the Olympiad team. May the next team in 2018 perform better and who knows, we may be at the podium then with our newly GM Razvan Preotu ( probably in the team )

                  Cheers

Few announcements to make ( What Bob Gillanders mentioned earlier )

                            1. I am talking about changing the registration procedures to ensure round 1 starts on time.
The first round is scheduled to start at 10am. I am making this the top priority for 2016. If you arrive late, you don’t play round 1. This will come as a shock to those who wander in late and assume chess tournaments never start on time. So, be warned.
                            The procedures are:
For those who pre-register, you must arrive on site by 9:45am. If you don’t pre-register, you must arrive on site by 9:30am.
To check in, you must hand in your registration card in person. The registration cards will be on a table by the entrance. We will not be collecting any fees before round 1. Everyone is responsible for paying entry fees and CFC dues before round 2.

                            2. This is an adult tournament. All players must be CFC current members. Junior players have to be CFC members as well. The cost of CFC membership is $ 32 and $48 for adults.

Thanks to all who has pre-registered and wish you all Good luck and have fun in the tournament.

The tournament is this Saturday - 2 days from today.
