We apologize for the eccentric capitalization from the website. We miss seeing a Canadian or two on the list and, of course, Vassily Ivanchuk. At least Alexander Morozevich is there!

Sergey Karjakin said at the final press conference of the WCC that he intended to play at the World Rapid and Blitz in Qatar in December but his name is not on the above list. Perhaps he will be a late entry.

World Rapid and Blitz Championships Doha 2016

        December 2, 2016

The tournament starts December 26th. Among the players not attending are Fabiano Caruana, Wesley So, Ding Liren, Vladimir Kramnik, Le Quang Liem and Dmitry Andreikin.

There is also another non-starter in Iuri Shkuro of Ukraine, who is rated 2814 in blitz but who has almost never appeared outside of Ukraine. We have written about him in the thread on the Paris Grand Chess Tour 2016.

The commentators are said to be Evgeny Miroshnichenko and Anna Rudolf. CTers will remember Miro from the Tal Memorial 2016, Candidates 2016, Moscow and World Cup 2015, Baku.

Anna Rudolf (born 12 November 1987 in Miskolc) is a Hungarian chess player. I have not seen her commentating before. She will be on the media team for Tata Steel 2017. I believe she cohosts with Sopiko Guramishvili on chess24 as Miss Strategy and Miss Tactics.

A hectic day for those playing, those watching and those commentating. Anna Rudolf and Evgeney Miroschnichenko make a lively pair. Miro is wearing a bow tie. He can look at a video shot of a board from the side and comment and analyze comfortably.

Anton Korobov of Ukraine has five points out of five in the first leg.

Levan Pantsulaia is having quite a tournament as well. In the first five rounds he has drawn with Nepomniachtchi, beaten Carlsen, beaten Jakovenko, drawn with Tomashevsky and beaten Artemiev!

Levon Aronian has beat Vassily Ivanchuk and is to meet Anton Korobov in Round Six tomorrow. He was seen to pull a cell phone out of his pocket. Viewers are asking if it is against the rules to have a cell phone in your pocket.

Sergey Karjakin has lost two games – against Grandelius and Nguyen Ngoc Truong.

Hikaru Nakamura has drawn three games.

Magnus Carlsen said he has not been in Norway since October. He went to Australia after his World Championship Match and won’t be going back to his homeland until February. He has his whole family with him on this extended vacation.

Baadur Jobava is wearing wraparound black sunglasses and he is well down the list just like Karjakin.

In Banikas-Salinas, Salinas claimed repetition of position but, of course, the players weren’t recording the moves. The arbiter was asked, he found the claim was incorrect and awarded Banikas two minutes extra.

In the Women’s Rapids, Anna Muzychuk leads with 4.0/4.0, followed by Inna Gaponenko, Alexandra Kosteniuk, Aleksandra Goryachkina and Kateryna Lagno. Valentina Gunina has 2.5/4.0 and stands thirteenth.

Levan Pantsulaia (Tbilisi, February 26, 1986) is a Georgian chess player. He was World Under-16 champion in 2002, the same year he earned the IM title, and became a GM in 2005 after placing 19th overall in the 6th European Individual Championship (2005). That result qualified him for the FIDE World Cup (2005), in which he reached the third round before falling to Boris Gelfand in rapid tie-breaks.

In this tournament so far, he has beaten both Carlsen and Nakamura!

                      ________

Anna says that Peter Svidler was supposed to play in the Rapid but got sick. In a message, he said he hopes to come for the Blitz.

At the start of this round, the players got their pairings and sat down. Then it was discovered that a few of the pairings were wrong and people had to go to different tables. Magnus had taken the time to walk to his family and talked to his sisters. Then with the round about to start, he had to run back to be in time.

Peter Doggers interviews Vassily after his game. Asked if he is playing well, he says he doesn’t know but he has a lot of points. He said that Mamedyarov tried to win but underestimated his opponent.

He played in a draughts tournament during the Baku Olympiad instead of participating there. He likes draughts because he is meeting a whole new group of players, not the same ones as always in chess

He made 4.5 points out of 5 today and leads the field.

The commentators are asked just what draughts are. Anna says that it is 10x10 checkers. In her country, you can buy a chess set with draughts. When you flip over the chessboard, there is a 10 x10 checkers board there.

One chessbomb kibitzer says, “Who would think that Ivanchuk, the dude who lost tons of classical games on time in 2012 could dominate the rapid section here!”

The leaders of both the men and women’s sections are Ukrainian.
