This appears to conflict with the Quebec Open, which the FQE website shows as beginning on August 12.

Thanks Andrew for highlighting the conflict.

I am afraid we can't change the date as I dont see the Quebec Open in the CFC website and we have already booked the dates. July is full of tournaments and August is the same.

We have already obtained the approval from CFC as well before deciding the dates

Why bother having an U1600 section? What will be the winner of this section called: Canadian Junior U1600 Champion?
The best way to do a Canadian Junior is a round robin with the top 10 players http://chess.ca/crosstable?tournamen...059&key=170318
Make the entry fee $200 and it will cover for the 1st place cash price and the rent. If other players want to play do another side tournament for them.

Any reason to not to do it periodically, before that date?

                    Hi Rene,

Thanks for your input. This is our first attempt in organizing this National youth tournament. Let's see how this goes for this year and we will try to change it next year based on the feedbacks we receive this year ( If our bid for next year succeed ). We cant change the current format mid way. The U-1600 is basically the reserve section. Your input means a lot to us and we will definitely take note of it.

We are not hoping to make money out of this tournament ( lucky if we can break-even ) and this tournament is more on providing an opportunity for our best youth to be able to go to the world junior ( boy and girl section ) in Italy in October.

Have you wonder why the last Canadian Junior was way back in 2011 or 2012 ?

It was in 2013. Here's the list of the Canadian Junior Championships: http://chess.ca/canadian-champions#Junior

According to the flyer "Total cash prize fund: $1,500 air ticket for the Open section winners ( boy and girl ) each total $ 3k"

For me it looks like the reason for having a "reserve" section is to cover the cash prize of the one section (boys and girls) "CYCC".

The best way to determine this is with a 10 players round robin.

There's enough time left (over 4 months) to send emails and see how many players are interesting in a round robin.

Kudos to Larry for the 2013 Canadian Junior: no entry fee, free accommodation for out of town players + 2 flight tickets to the World Junior for the winner and his coach.

BTW any news from FIDE regarding the money for the GM norm tournaments?

Answer : I will be happy if we can break-even. As mentioned earlier, this tournament is organized to present the best youth ( boy and girl ) to represent Canada. The winners will not have to worry about air tickets and as official players of Canada also enjoy the benefits of hotel and food.

Answer : As replied earlier, we will probably do it next year and not this year. We cant change mid way. This will look bad on us as a tournament organizer.

Answer : CMA - Larry always does great events and I always supported his tournaments. Having said that, I supposed the tournament ( 2013 ) is something of giving back to the chess community as it is a definitely loss making for that tournament.

BTW any news from FIDE regarding the money for the GM norm tournaments?
Answer : I think CFC will have to answer this question and not for this tournament organizer to answer

I hope I have answer your questions. Thanks for your input again. We will do a survey/Q&A among the participants this year to see if they prefer a round robin as what you suggested.

A better survey by simple stats: compare the CAN active juniors' FIDE top 50 list with entrants to a tournament.

Gary, are you still a Youth Exec? Look for options to get monies from the youth fund for the junior tournament, like instead of sending U16 overseas to olympiads, make a strong junior championship. Maybe this year is too late :/

                            >>Yes. I am. The youth fund comes from the CYCC and has many usage for the youth International tournaments. This year CYCC hopefully will have at least 200 players or more ( I am quite positive ). Maybe next year but definitely not this year. I am just trying to help out the juniors by having this tournament as I don't see anyone doing it for quite a number of years already. People may just complain why don't we have this and that tournament but they don't see that it takes a lot of effort to organize a tournament if you are working full time and chess is just more of a volunteering work. And if the tournament is not successful ( not even break-even ) you bet if the tournament organizer will bid for the tournament again !! :(

So you want the participants in one junior tournament, the Canadian Youth Chess Championship, to subsidize the participants in another junior tournament, the Canadian Junior? I think it makes more sense for each tournament to stand on its own. There are not large sums of excess money generated every year by the youth fund contribution from the CYCC. I think the under 16 Olympiad is a good tournament which we have recently begun to support. Whether we can continue will depend on the success of CYCC's this year and in the future. The primary purpose of the CYCC is to fund the winners of the CYCC to go to WYCC and WCCC.
