  • WFM Svitlana Demchenko wins an international tournament in Kazan

One of the strongest Canadian junior players, Svitlana Demchenko from Ottawa, ON (the 2016 NAYCC Girls U-16 champion and the 2015 CYCC Girls U-12 champion) took part in the international chess festival in Kazan, Tatarstan, Russia.

The festival was part of the third edition of the Young Expatriates' World Games, which brought together more than 600 Russian-speaking participants from 48 countries who competed in basketball, volleyball, mini-soccer, swimming, table tennis and chess. The chess portion was organized by the Chess Federation of Tatarstan and held at the same venue as the annual Nezhmetdinov Memorial. The 12th World Champion Anatoly Karpov was the honourary patron of this chess festival.

In a field of 26 young women from 24 countries, Svitlana scored eleven straight victories and won the championship.

A video clip from the Young Expatriates' World Games has been published by the organizers. Chess portion starts at the 1:29 mark.

Congratulations to Svitlana, her family and her Ottawa club!

Svitlana is an amazing player with a lot of potential. The first time I saw her only 3 years ago was in one of our weekend tournaments in Gatineau. She was then just 10 years old. She impressed me with her poise and ...her result! She won her U1400 section against male players easily 4 times her age. Since then her rating exploded and gained more than 800 points!! Her CFC rating hovers now around 2200 which would rank her, as per FIDE, 5th in the world for girls 13 years of age. We wish her all the best in her future tournaments including the next CYCC and the WYCC in Montevideo Uruguay.

When we invited her last month at our prize ceremony for our local CYCC qualifying event she graciously accepted and even proposed to give a simul! Kids were a bit tired but it would be great if we could organize something with her next season.

Note: There is a little error in the text. In 2015 she was champion in the U12 not U14. She is competing this year in the U14.
