General Guidelines
---- Nous avons besoin d'un traduction français!
Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
This telemarketer guy calls the CFC phone on a regular basis. Do I want my ducts cleaned?
I say no thanks. He keeps calling. This has been going on for a while.
Sometimes I am polite, say no and hang up, sometimes no so polite, sometimes I curse and swear at him.
Sometimes i string him along with silly answers, sometimes I give him the silent treatment.
It's all so stupid and a waste of time. My question is, why would he simply cross my name off his call list?
Why keep calling? What am I missing? Is this guy simply stupid?
Some of these telemarketing companies use computerized solicitation lists; i.e. an app on their LAN/desktop initiates a call, the telemarketer does the spiel, the call terminates, the app initiates the next call. The telemarketer's job performance rating isn't determined by doing good deeds, like removing your number from the solicitation list. Sorry. Your phone service provider gets paid for allowing these people to harass you. Tell them you want a cut of the action or you're going to file a complaint with the regulator. :)
Duct makes me think of duck which makes me think of Donald Duck which makes me think of Donald Trump. This just in: Trump is a jerk!!

Hi bob ;
Do as one of my seniors does. She says" You clean Ducks? Yes I need your services to clean a pile of Goose shit in my back yard. When can you come and by the way Premier Kathleen Winne needs her ducks at Queens Park washed as there is lots of bull shit going on there."
Want or need? Drkulec could sure use a cleaning of the ducts between his ears...
Don't you have some rapists and murderers to spring from prison? Its nice to know that I continue to command so much of your attention.
Your democrats are getting really used to losing. I think they need to put you in charge of their messaging if they want to lose even more. Since the Georgia race was supposed to be a referendum on Trump, I guess the voters in suburban highly educated areas are still pro-Trump.

Hi John,
I have had numerous discussions stringing this guy along: once I asked how much for my Guinea Pig?.
They always ask: How many bedrooms on the top floor? My answers have ranged from 0 to 25.
I've told them I don't have any ducts, just had their 10 year cleaning, there is no top floor, etc etc etc
It is obvious there is no incentive to delete me from the call list.
I even wrote my MP. No response. Even they don't want to tackle this issue.
It is similar to the junk mail problem.

I tried blocking the incoming number (my home phone system has such a feature)
but it is obvious they use fabricated or spoofed phone numbers and they just pretend
to call from another random number the next time around...
This is going to be reason enough to completely ditch my home phone forever.
I *think* there is some regulation that they cannot blind call cell numbers but that
doesn't seem to stop me getting the odd call on my cell with a recording that I have
won a cruise or some hotel package... thankfully, those morons are not as persistent
as the duct cleaners.
I have been tempted to schedule the duct cleaning and then just not be at home when
they show up. Or borrow a hungry rottweiler or 3 for the occasion.

You should resist the temptation....they'll probably charge you for the call-out!

I would not give them any credit card info (of course) and it might be worth the sort of battle you are suggesting might happen...
I could clean my own ducts with all the billing letters they would send me.

Hi Bob:
You could always get Lenny to answer the calls for you:
You could also ask all Telemarketers if they have a credit card. You can say as soon as they start their speech " Hold ON!! Do you have a credit Card? I charge by the minute to listen so until I get your Credit Number I cannot continue"
They usually hang up.
