    Re: 2017 Canadian Championship

Just a note for the future organizers: the tournament per book should be called "Canadian Zonal Championship Tournament" if it's a Zonal tournament. A regular is "Canadian Championship". This year it is called "CANADIAN CLOSED CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP 2017". Now need for Closed.
As for the French version "Championnat invitation d'échecs du Canada" - "invitation" is "closed" in French?

Did Le Siege withdraw after Rd.5 loss to Shiyam?

Beaulieu, Bolduc, Kleinman, Le Siège, and Marchand are all marked down on chess-results.com as taking byes for rounds 6-9 inclusive.

eta: Add Roland Chabot as well. Round 8 has 11 boards.

It says 'not paired' - I presume that is different than a bye? For that matter, there are 0-point and half-point byes aren't there?
This all seems rather strange, but I did not have a good feeling when I saw so many players who were 'once 2000 rated'.
If several players withdraw it makes the Swiss system with a small starting field even more silly.

It seems pretty obvious to me that they withdrew.

On todays Canadian Chess News Feed ( http://chess.ca/newsfeed/node/970 ), it was noted:

"Alex had been playing with an infected tooth, and withdrew after his loss to Thavandiran."

Playoffs at the 2017 Canadian Championship

Are they going for playoffs for both the championship crown and the IM title?

The new Canadian Champ is GM Bator Sambuev due due to his 1.5-0.5 speed chess victory over Noritsyn.

The hardest working man in Canadian chess is on his way to Toronto to teach at his chess camp. WOW!
