Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
may I make a suggestion...the FQE indicates on the crosstable list of events, the number of players. I thought this was a great feature, so I asked our IT fellow to do the same...it was done within minutes...so can we do that on the CFC site too please?

Our Festival St-Denis event which ended Sunday evening is already FQE rated...pretty awesome!

There are a number of things that we might change with our lists and queries, but this stuff all seems to be locked down (at least as far as I can tell). I have to admit this was a "mistake" on our part (being at the mercy of the contractors to make any changes like this).
Do you know when the next CMA rating update will be ?

We usually update ratings at CMA twice a week.
However, our ratings guy, Christian Lacasse, is on vacation from July 22 - Aug 6 so the updated list will appear shortly thereafter. In the old days at CMA, there was no such thing as holidays :).

It's super easy peasy, Fred. I have no idea what you mean "locked down"?
Either go the casual no code route (which I don't like*) as CMA does and put number of players into the same <td></td> tag (table data) as that of the tournament's Name.
CMA example:

*I don't like it because, a) it's separate data and deserves its own column b) CMA site is built on a 12 column grid (bootstrap?) ... super easy front-end stuff to work with!

?????? My understanding is you have your own server on which is hosted a MySQL database version of the CFC ratings database. How can the data possibly not be accessible to any programmer with the relevant passwords?

The critical word here is programmer! Fred and I are not programmers.
What Fred means by "locked down" is that we would need some programming to make this minor cosmetic change.
Why would be bother doing this minor cosmetic change with so many more urgent matters.

I would remind everyone our rating software was written in 1996.
It is 21 years old. You don't spend money tweaking it.
If you want to spend money on programming, let's create a whole new rating software package.

Neil, I would rather develop ways of increasing efficiency in the office. Typing the number of players as part of the tournament heading for each entry is ridiculous. If you want to know how many players, just click on the event.
If you want to serious increase efficiency in the office look no further than having a simple automated process to concurrently update all Ratings, Cross Tables & Recent Tournaments list ...including the new data column showing the number of players ... why the number of players matters I have no idea, beyond data brain candy? I happen to enjoy data brain candy!
I have no idea how you receive your submitted cross tables ... various ways? Including hand written?
To start the process ... cross tables should be submitted via an online CFC cross table submission form. When the fields of the form have been correctly completed ... all other tables such as the Ratings and Recent Tournaments will be automatically updated using a simple JavaScript or two.
So, Bob G., no matter where you are in the world (perhaps sitting on the beach in Cancun) all you have to do is check your email. If you have an alert from the CFC Data Center check to see what's pending for your approval. If no red flags show, such as incorrectly filled out cross table form fields, non-payment, etc., upload the new data. Player's ratings, cross tables & recent tournament list all done ... without you having to enter a single character!

That's true. But Neil, we have already automated the process beyond what you describe.

Pray tell, how does the data flow happen/proceed? And what exactly gets automatically updated from the time an org fills out the online CFC cross table form? PayPal transactions too, I hope.

...what percent of your time do waste entering data? You seem to suggest that you still manually enter data.
