    Re: Team Canada at the 2017 WYCC in Uruguay

    Friday, September 22, 2017. A swing nature of Swiss pairings in competitions with highly heterogeneous playing fields manifested itself in full force. After scoring 10/16 in the morning round (Round 6), Canadians had to be paired with much stronger opponents again for the evening round, and the result in Round 7 was 6.5/16. Thanks everyone for your valiant effort! A total of 16.5/32 today.

    A remarkable win of Adam Gaisinsky (U-14 Open) over a U.S. opponent rated 352 points higher. Two wins in a day by Sergey Noritsyn (U-14 Open) and Richard Chen (U-16 Open). Bravo Adam, Sergey and Richard!

    In one of the extreme examples, in U-16 Girls, Emma He had to play an opponent rated 584 (!) points higher. ( A loss of rating points in defeat was of course, negligible; Emma is +62.8 FIDE points over seven games. )

      • No perfect scores among 385 players any more.
      • Our friendly watch over U.S. player Sophie Morris-Suzuki continues. In Rd 6, Sophie was paired against an opponent from Russia with a rating 627 (!) points higher, and finally succumbed. No worries, she rebounded in Rd 7 against an opponent from Serbia who was "just" 378 points higher :) and, despite a score of 4.5/7, now shows a total gain of 150.00 FIDE rating points over seven games.

          An awesome display by 2017 Canadian Junior champion Richard Chen. Good luck to you and the rest of the team in the last few rounds. Cheers to Chess in Canada.

            Saturday, September 23, Round 8: 7.5/16 for Team Canada.

            David Macarczyk (U-14 Open) drew with an opponent from Slovenia who was rated 742 (!) points higher. That ought to be the upset of the evening. Congratulations David and Dorota!

            Hard-fought victories by Richard Feng, Eric Li, Ellen Tao, Joey Zhong, and Jiaying Wang. Way to go team!

            The majority of Canadian players show double-digit FIDE rating gains over eight games. The current leader is Adam Gaisinsky (U-14 Open) with +85.60 points.

                  Sunday, September 25, Round 9: 7/16 for Team Canada. Victories for Rohan Talukdar, Svitlana Demchenko, Zhanhe Liu, Ellen Tao, Jiaying Wang. Bravo!

                  While only seven Canadians are at 50% or better over nine games, a whopping 13 team members out of 16 have approximately or significantly non-negative rating change. We know that all players are doing their best leaving everything at the board, and it shows! Almost everyone is playing well above their supposed strength. Kudos to the coaches and to the CFC that sent them!

                  Two playing days left: a usual afternoon round and an early morning one, plus a closing ceremony. Hang on team!

                    The U.S. contingent in U-16 Girls leaves me awestruck. Sophie Morris-Suzuki still leads all WYCC participants with an eye-popping gain of 198.40 FIDE points over nine games. In hot pursuit are teammates WIM Annie Wang (currently ranked first with 8.5/9 points) with a 174.40 rating gain and Simona Nayberg with +170.00 points.

                    Bravo to Ellen Tao for putting up a fight in such a tough field!

                      Re: Team Canada at the 2017 WYCC in Uruguay

                      A memorable event before the start of a penultimate round.

                      Her Excellency Madame Joanne Frappier, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Canada to Uruguay, generously agreed to our request to greet Team Canada before Rd 10. Christina Tao and Igor Gaisinsky went to the Embassy in person this morning to arrange all the details.

                      Madame Ambassador was inspired to learn that the WYCC was run by the Canadian Arbiter-in-Chief Mr. Hal Bond. She came to the playing venue at Sheraton Montevideo and took time to meet with each player and coach individually, then kindly posed for a team photo, for series of photos first with each player, then with each family, and of course with IA Hal Bond and HOD Christina Tao, as well as for photos with the tournament officials. The President of the Uruguay Chess Federation presented Madame Ambassador with an oversized souvenir stamp dedicated to the WYCC; members of Team Canada received souvenir envelopes.

                      The players and parents deeply cherished this sincere manifestation of support that the whole country puts behind them.

                      Read everything about this incredible meet-and-greet and look at great photos in Christina's report on the team page.

                      We are deeply grateful to Her Excellency Madame Joanne Frappier, to the Head of Mission Assistant Madame Ginette Marie Noël Gurascier, and to the other personnel of the Embassy of Canada in Uruguay for making it happen. Special thanks go to Hal and his Arbiter Team and to the dignitaries from the Uruguayan federation for taking part in the festivities and allowing pictures to be taken in the playing hall.

                          Are you a collector Garland?

                          If Svitlana and Pavlo received such an envelope, you'll be able to get a close look at the stamp.

                            Monday, September 26, Round 10: Inspired by the meeting with Her Excellency the Ambassador Madame Joanne Frappier, Team Canada came out of the gate swinging and posted 10.5/16, the best single-round result so far.

                            Among the highlights of the round:
                            • Richard Feng wins over an Italian player rated 513 (!) points higher;
                            • Jiaying Wang vanquishes an opponent from Latvia with the 249-point rating gap;
                            • an important victory by Rohan Talukdar.

                            Rating gains continue to prove that Canadian players are punching well above their weight. Congratulations to Jiaying Wang on crossing a symbolic three-digit threshold: +100.80 FIDE points over 8 games. CM Richard Chen is right there, too, with +96.00 points.

                            All that remains is the last stretch. The highest-ranking Canadians prior to the last round are CM Rohan Talukdar, tied for 4th-9th places in U-14 Open, and WFM Svitlana Demchenko, tied for 7th-12th places in U-14 Girls. Tomorrow, Rohan plays on Board 1 against the leader from Mongolia while Svitlana plays on Board 3. Tune in for the DGT broadcast.

                            Go Canada!

                                More exciting news from Montevideo. Team Canada coaches Kaiqi Yang and Nikolay Noritsyn attended the FIDE Trainers' Seminar (lecturer - GM Darcy Lima, President of the Brazilian Chess Federation), successfully passed exams and were both awarded the highest possible title - FIDE Trainer (FT). It is remarkable that Nikolay and Kaiqi were the only ones among all seminar attendees (who came from five different countries) to earn the FT titles.

                                Congratulations Kaiqi and Nikolay, and thank you for your work with Team Canada at the 2017 WYCC!
