General Guidelines
---- Nous avons besoin d'un traduction français!
Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
15. Have fun!
(Thanks to Nigel Hanrahan for writing these up!)
Anyone know what Peter is talking about below in regards to labour day Open?
Anyone know what Peter is talking about below in regards to labour day Open?
I would like someone to clarify. Has the whole Labour Day tournament been moved from the old Site Macedonian hall where its been run for like 10yrs or so? Or is this a conflicting tournament date? And if it is a conflicting tournament my question to Peter Bokhout is why?
Re: Anyone know what Peter is talking about below in regards to labour day Open?
It's been run there since at least 1991. It did have to be moved one year a few years ago. Maybe this is the same case? He has used the official title of the tournament.
Re: Anyone know what Peter is talking about below in regards to labour day Open?
Hi Zeljko,
I want sure exactly how long the tournament has been running for, thanks for the correction. I wasn't aware that it has been running for 18yrs. But I spoke with Randy Moysoski (Spelling?) At the last tournament at Hart House and he told me it was going to be at the Macedonian Hall early September. That was about two weeks ago..... Im not sure why anybody would want to try and split the turnouts especially since the Labour day at the Macedonian has been a long standing tradition. I think ive played in about 5 of them. Maybe he didn't know about the Labour Day at the Macedonian, but then again who from The Toronto Area hasnt heard of this tournament?
Re: Anyone know what Peter is talking about below in regards to labour day Open?
I am rooming at the Canadian Open with Alex Ferreira, who has been helping Bryan on the organizing side of a number of recent Toronto tournaments. I'll ask him to contact Bryan and find out what is going on.
And maybe Peter could come back and post to advise us of the background and details of his announcement.
Re: Anyone know what Peter is talking about below in regards to labour day Open?
Hi Sheldon;
Well I know one thing Peter has no good track record for organizing a great Tournament that I know of. I don't think his turn out will be that great. However if he is posting those Prize funds he better not guarantee as he'll lose his shirt.
Then again with a low turn out maybe this is the tourney to attend as the competition may not be that strong and it may be some easy cash. Food for thought?
Oh sorry I was looking at this as a greedy so and so not a chess player who plays for the good of chess and not for the cash.
Re: Anyone know what Peter is talking about below in regards to labour day Open?
I was not aware of the Toronto Labour Day Open running anywhere, as I had not seen any advertising about it. However, I will gladly drop out of the running if other arrangements have been made (as they seem to have been).
Consider the Tartu College site dead! Chances are that the Macedonian Hall will cost less in rent, anyway. Peter
Re: Anyone know what Peter is talking about below in regards to labour day Open?
Peter;
I'd suspect that Tartu would be cheaper due to less playing space.
Not sure why you had not contacted Bryan Lamb though, as he has been the TD for the Labour Day for a few years.
Or at least posted an inquiry here first.
I'm very happy that you stepped forward and posted a Toronto Labour Day.
It shows you want Toronto Chess and The Labour Day Open to continue.:)
If Bryan had been unable to make Macedonian happen I would have come to your event as it would have taken me less time on the TTC. Plus I have only missed 3 that I recall of Toronto Labour Days since my first in 1973 at Varsity Arena.
One suggestion: If you can get the Tartu on a regular basis then why not run some Junior or minor tournaments there. It will keep Chess in the Toronto Downtown area competing and growing stronger. Hey the Juniors are the future of Chess everywhere. Maybe you can get an event for Yuanling Yuan to help her increase her chess at the Library level. You could run the event for Juniors and have a portion of entry go towards her Library program.
Hey playing for big money at the Junior Level is not always the key.
What the key is to expose parents and Juniors to chess. They like trophies to show off, otherwise soccer and baseball and hockey teams would die fast.
Thanks for thinking about Chess and Toronto Downtown Chess as well.
Re: Anyone know what Peter is talking about below in regards to labour day Open?
If you want Tartu as a regular event location pay them more & have less for the prize fund, pay them at least as much per day as the Macedonian Hall is paid, something like $300 to $400/day but you'd have to check that figure, $100/day as some tried is just going to get you bumped to the cafeteria again when they can book a wedding for the main hall.

Hi John,
Not sure how to interpret your messageabove, are you trying to say something? At one point you say he hasnt ran any good tournaments that youve played in. Then you go on to tell him that you would play in one of his tournaments?!
Re: Anyone know what Peter is talking about below in regards to labour day Open?
Only if Labour Day was Canceled by Bryan Lamb. I think that is there in the fine print. If Peter had tried to run a tournament against Bryan I think he'd have lost his shirt. But I like playing in Downtown Toronto.
