FIDE News – Fake Championships and Ethics Violations

    May 30, 2018

Two bits of news this morning from the official site:

FIDE reports Mr. Ilyumzhinov to the Ethics Commission

To address inquiries and rumors that have come up in the press, FIDE Deputy President, Mr. Georgios Makropoulos, confirms that pursuant to the authorization provided by the FIDE Presidential Board by virtue of its decision at the 2018 1st Quarter Presidential Board meeting held 6 - 9 April, in Minsk, Belarus, a Report has been submitted to the FIDE Ethics Commission against FIDE President Mr. Kirsan Ilyumzhinov under the provisions of the FIDE Code of Ethics.

    Announcement regarding fake "World Championships"

FIDE has noticed that a private company from Germany, named "Amateur Chess Organisation (ACO)" is advertising events with the misleading name “World Senior Chess Championships” supposed to be held in Crete, Greece in October 2018. These events do not have any official recognition from FIDE. Furthermore, the above mentioned private company is abusing the FIDE ratings and the title "World Championships" to misguide players into believing that these events might be official world championships.

FIDE is the only global organisation recognised by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to hold the World Championships in chess of all categories and age groups. FIDE also informs its national federations and their players that these so called by ACO "World Senior Chess Championships" are not the official FIDE championships and they will not be included in the FIDE rating list.

The only official and real World Senior Chess Championships 2018 are organized this year by FIDE in Slovenia, from 17 to 30 November, and the official website is wscc2018.european-chessacademy.com

FIDE is obliged to protect all member National Chess Federations and their players from practices of misleading and fake “World Championships”. The relevant FIDE administrative bodies will soon examine the issue in detail and in accordance with the FIDE regulations for the registration and licensing of organisers, players, trainers and arbiters.

I went to the ACO site...very impressive venue for their event!

I will be in Portugal on vacation just prior to this, and I am considering going to this event. Has anyone here taken part in the past?

It's cool how FIDE provides free marketing to an organization and event they are against. Now.. everyone who follows chess will know about it!

All the players in the official FIDE Wolrd Championship cycle must sign a contract that forbids them from participating in any competing World Championship not organized by FIDE. FIDE must clearly indicate which World Championships are fakes.

At what point does the "cycle" begin? At national championships? Any FIDE-rated event?

I think at one moment that tournament title had "Amateur" and a back-cover ad in the magazine Chess or Rochade.

There was also Stan Vaughan of Nevada, and his "World Chess Federation", and "American Chess Association". He sued FIDE for the right to use the term "World Chess Championship". Stan (a "Grandmaster") "won" the "World Championship" and got a rating of over 4000 (his chess.com rating is in the 1600's). Do a Google search for "stan vaughan chess" for more juicy details.

The African country of Burundi issued four chess-related stamps in 2011 - each with a Grandmaster on them. They were: Emanueal Lasker, Paul Morphy, Alexandra Kosteniuk, and Stan Vaughan.
