The CFC website has the following:

Canadian Closed & Zonal Chess Championships 2009
    Date: Starting July 30th, 2009
    BREAKING NEWS from Hal Bond
2009 Canadian Closed & Zonal 2009 Canadian Closed & Zonal:

(and so on ...) which indicates an incorrect starting date. Only if you download the .pdf file do you find out that the dates are August 7 to 16th. Nor did I find the dates announced either here or at the CFC public board. Probably I missed the announcements in both places, but maybe they need to be bumped up.

2039? I thought the Closed was by invitation only, and generally only masters got in?

That's not true. Every chess master is invited with certain restrictions.

Then what of these lower ranked players?

The last real closed round-robin was in 1996. After that it transformed into Swiss type. A good source for Canadian Closed http://www3.telus.net/public/swright2/homepage.html

This year it will be 80th Canadian Closed. The round number to celebrate :D

Perhaps the organizers try to complete the required 50 players for the prize fund.

Re: Bluvshtein tops field at Canadian Closed

The first announcement came in the first week of May, but point taken Jonathan. The CFC board is misleading. The Women's event is scheduled to begin on July 30. The Men's (absolute) begins August 7.

As for the rating floor, I am accepting a CFC, FIDE or FQE rating over 2200. I have listed the FIDE ratings because they won't change before the tournament.

Is there a website to watch for the preregistered list of players to be regularly updated prior to the start of that tournament?
